Casillero del Diablo Reserva Carmenere 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit low-key but nicely deep with well-integrated wood, earth, blackberry and herbal components. Rich in the mouth with well-integrated tannins and finely supporting acidity. The fruit leans a bit towards the red end of the spectrum with fairly noticeable spice notes popping up on the back end and leading to a fairly long finish with some uncovered wood tannins. I would like to see a bit more acidity here, but this does have some nice character. 86pts

Casillero del Diablo is a label produced by Concha y Toro Winery in Maipo Valley, Chile. Legend has it that in the early 1890s, winery founder Don Melchor went to his cellar to discover several of his best wines had gone missing. Hoping to ward off more thieves, he spread the rumor that this must have happened because a devil lived in his cellar, hence the name, which translates to “the devil’s cellar.” The first wines branded Casillero del Diablo were produced by Concha y Toro in 1953 and became an international success by the 1960s. The devil icon became a part of the packaging starting in the 1990s. The portfolio is now under the direction of winemaker Marcelo Papa. The wines are available in many styles and varietals of dry reds and whites, plus rosés and sparkling wines. Many of these considered terrific values for their pricepoints.  Read less

thick but medium bodied, like dark chocolate, very dark. Spicy with fruit of the forest notes. Very complex.

Full flavor, very complex, dark dark colour. Very good with meats and BBQ, ensure that at the right temperature to get the best flavors. I really like this range, and easy to find.

Very good wine considering the copious availability and the low price.

Earthy plum on the nose, cocoa, plum and bright berry flavors with a black pepper bite, nicely balanced, and smooth finish to add to the luxurious mouthfeel.

Aromas of blackberries, chocolate and oak, with well-balanced acidity and strong but round tannins. The chocolate and dark fruity flavors linger and delivers a long smooth finish. I was positively surprised by this wine, and it went excellent with strong cheese and beef.
