Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Intense on the nose with black cherry fruit. Accented with hints of leather and herbs, along with lots of sexy, toasty oak. Extracted in the mouth, this has a nice, austere heart with attractive earth and leather notes. The fruit is very front loaded, leaving the oak to carry the back end, which it does with sweet, toasty spice. The finish here turns extracted, bitter and hot. Time may be kind to this, but today it’s rough going. 87pts

The "Fiesole" vineyard is situated opposite the farmhouse of the same name where we have our offices and winery. This is the farm's oldest vineyard, situated 350 metres north-east of Montalcino. The grapes from this vineyard are usually used to produce our Brunello di Montalcino. Nearby we find the "Poderuccio" vineyard. It is situated at 350 metres above sea-level. These grapes are also used to produce our Brunello di Montalcino. In 1986 we bought Cerretalto, a magical place. It is a natural amphitheatre near the Asso river at a height which varies between 250 and 300 metres above sea-level. Its position to the east of Montalcino means that it has a unique and unmistakable "Terroir". On the opposite side of Montalcino to the south-east, near Castelnuovo dell'Abate we find the "Pietradonice"vineyard. The earth, the position, the microclimate, the choice of clones, the grafting and a well organised vineyard all help to produce great grapes which improve each year. Il terreno, l'esposizione, il microclima, la scelta dei cloni, portainnesti, sesto di impianto ci stanno dando delle grandi uve ogni anno migliori. In a single word - magnificent. PLast but not least, thanks to its fine landscape and uncontaminated nature is the "Cetine" vineyard. Here we have 25 hectares facing south south-east on a magical hillside near Sant'Angelo in Colle. The thyme and other plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub and the extreme drop in temperature at night contribute to give us fruit of incredible quality. Every year this Sangiovese gives us the hope and strength to become even better. Fantastic and magic. . Read less

Reddish brown hue. Relatively light bodied for what it was, mineralities but not much. Sour berries again which seem to be a recurring theme in Tuscany tastings. Very dry.

Reddish brown hue. Very dry. So dry that that is the only thing I can think of every time I taste. I might just not understand that it is young. It is definitely not for drinking now if that is the case. For more on the Tuscany vs All French, visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/04/tuscany-versus-all-french-tasting.html

Color, this wine has a nice and light, classic Brunello di Montalcino, seductive. Nose, very aromatic!, very complex, a lot of black fruits coming through, tar, dry leaves, earthiness. the nose is exemplary, WOW. Midpalate, this is the major drawback of this wine. the midpalate is water thin, very light, hallow, not what you'd expect from the nose. Finish, nice firm tannins, lingering, complex, dry fruits are dominating, and dancing on my palate. Overall, this wine is acceptable but is obviously overrated! this is no way a 100 pointer. I am 93 on this effort. Happy drinking!

Bright red ruby in color with scents of caramel and alcohol. Up front flavors of cherries and plum. Tannins are still pretty strong on the finish but a nice wine overall.

Tenuta Nuova is a pioneering and visionary vineyard project emboding the belief and passion of Casanova di Neri. Tenuta Nuova means new property; Tenuta Nuova is a place where nobody planted Sangiovese before; Tenuta Nuova is the will of Casanova di Neri to produce a powerful yet drinkable Brunello with a high ageing potential. Maceration is assisted by a falling down system, and everything is carried out inside open cone-shaped and temperature controlled fermenters for 24 days. TASTING NOTES : At first sight, Tenuta Nuova 2013 already shows its potential from the bright red color. The bouquet is very expressive and intense, with notes of young red fruit, blackberry and the typical balsamic. In the mouth is full body, persistent and rich, with silky tannins and a superb length. A combination of elegance and power, it should be opened at least 2 hours in advance or alternatively decanting gently. ** Only 6 in Stock **

GIOVANNI NERI TASTING NOTES: Casanova di Neri proudly produces the White Label Brunello since 1978. Our passion and love for the land and our own distinctive Sangiovese joined together to make a wine that stands out for elegance, finesse, high quality and long ageing potential. 2012 winter was considered mild until February, when snow and frost hit the area quite heavily. Those conditions provided some water storage in the ground for the rest of the growing season and let the grapes ripen slowly and regularly. Spring and summer were quite dry meaning lower yields compared to previous vintages. The White Label grapes have been harvested from the last week of September to the first week of October. The most distinctive characteristic of 2012 vintage was the size of the clusters: Small, with widely/loosely spaced berries that brought to an outstanding ripening. The prevailing features of White Label 2012 are balance and finesse, which are supported by a long and velvety finish and an intense red fruit bouquet. This wine is already showing its pleasantness despite the long ageing potential. VINIFICATION: Manual selection of the grapes before and after destemming, followed by a spontaneus fermentation without the addition of artificial yeast. Maceration is assisted by a falling down system, and everything is carried out inside open cone-shaped and temperature controlled fermenters for 23 days. AGEING IN OAK BARRELS: 43 months ALCOHOL/VOL.: 14.5% DRY EXTRACT: 31 TOTAL ACIDITY: 5.9 ** Only 12 in Stock **

Casanova di Neri was established in 1971 when Giovanni Neri acquired a large estate within Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for land believed to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. There are now 120 acres of vineyards divided among four distinct sites. Improved quality in the vineyards has led to more attention in the winery, from vinification to the careful selection of casks for aging but always with the maximum respect for tradition. Grapes for this 2011 went to the selection table for bunches, de-stemming and then the selection table again for individual grapes. Fermentation is without addition of yeasts and maceration in open temperature controlled conical vats for 3 to 4 weeks. The wine aged in oak barrels for about 42 months and 6 months in bottle. The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points as did the Wine Spectator and Antonio Galloni who said "Casanova di Neri's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a very pretty and expressive wine. Sweet red cherry, menthol, rose petal and mint open up first, followed by a touch of blood orange that adds lovely aromatic lift and brightness throughout. Although not especially complex, the 2011 should drink beautifully for at least a handful of years. Today, it is quite pretty and expressive."

From vineyards in the southern part of the appellation, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova does show some of the hallmarks of the warm vintage. Compared to the base Brunello, the aromas here are slightly less delineated and you do get whiffs of overtly ripe raspberry and blackberry that intermingle with exotic tones of Asian spice, licorice and incense. In the mouth, the wine’s fabric is lush and rich with sweet tannins and opulent consistency. It needs a few more years to flesh out. Drink: 2016–2025.

Vivid red. Multidimensional nose offers captivating aromas of raspberry, sour red cherry, redcurrant, brown sugar, cinnamon and minerals, lifted by a strong note of fresh citrus fruit. Vibrant flavors of red and black fruits, pink peppercorn and sweet spices are wonderfully pure and juicy. This sneakily concentrated yet refined wine shows a rare blend of power and delicacy and finishes extremely long, with very fine-grained tannins and truly mind-blowing purity of small red fruits and violet. Impeccable balance only adds to its star qualities. One of the best young Tenuta Nuovas I have ever tried and it’s also one of the two or three best Brunellos of the vintage.
