What to Expect

Brunello di Montalcino is certainly one of the premier expressions of Sangiovese in all of Italy. Unlike other regions, such as Chianti, Brunello must be produced from 100% Sangiovese, in fact the particular clone referred to as Brunello. The vineyards of Brunello cover a large hillside and can be roughly divided into four regions, though things like age of vines and vinification techniques can easily mask the characteristics of each zone. Brunello is uusally a medium full-bodied wine with both strong acidity and tannins that support leathery, subtly spicy tones of coffee and tobacco that add depth to the classic plum and dark cherry fruits.

Winemakers Notes

This Brunello di Montalcino is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for about 30 months and in the bottle for a year. It was born in their historic vineyards. Its constant high quality is further enhanced by its elegance and finesse. The vineyards lie to the south of Montalcino, a zone of Brunello marked by warmer micro-climates and intense, powerful wines.

Reviews

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by Piedmont Report Saturated ruby. The Tenuta Nuova is Neri's more modern-styled Brunello. It is made from vines planted in the southern part of the zone and aged in small oak barrels. It displays darker color and notable concentration with masses of sweet dark fruit, smoke and licorice flavors that flow onto the palate with exceptional length and balance in a powerful, brooding style.

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 127, July/August 2006 Saturated medium ruby; very dark for sangiovese. Primary aromas of blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate, tar and melted licorice. Juicy, minerally and penetrating, in a rather brooding modern style. Concentrated, primary flavors of crushed berries, licorice, leather and cola show a lovely sweetness. Finishes with broad, mouthcoating tannins that show a slight youthful dryness today.
