What to Expect

Brunello di Montalcino is certainly one of the premier expressions of Sangiovese in all of Italy. Unlike other regions, such as Chianti, Brunello must be produced from 100% Sangiovese, in fact the particular clone referred to as Brunello. The vineyards of Brunello cover a large hillside and can be roughly divided into four regions, though things like age of vines and vinification techniques can easily mask the characteristics of each zone. Brunello is uusally a medium full-bodied wine with both strong acidity and tannins that support leathery, subtly spicy tones of coffee and tobacco that add depth to the classic plum and dark cherry fruits.

...better balanced, softer, sweeter wine than its 1997 counterpart. Nevertheless, it needs to be drunk over the next 5-6 years as it does not have the necessary depth to age longer. Like finely meshed cashmere. Exotic aromas of plums, incense and Indian spices. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins and a long, caressing, silky aftertaste. A wine with loads of finesse. Give it time. Best after 2004. 4,580 cases made. (JS)
