Mid-depth bordeaux color. The vibrantly fresh nose of this wine sings of Carmenère! Soy, tomato leaf, spice cake and a whiff roasted green bell pepper meld together. The tannins are soft and caressing and the acidity is popping, making this an easily enjoyed red. Some heat shows through on the modest finish, which is most distracting when sipped without food.

I opened a 2003 Casa Silva Reserva Carmenere not knowing exactly what to expect and was blown away. Cherry, plum and tobacco exude from the glass and get more intense with time. Perfect tannins with slight pepper and licorice on the finish. I'm sure the '03's are long gone but if this is any indication of what more recent years are like, buy it by the case and get your floss out. I paid $12 for this one in '06.

Casa Silva is now owned by Mario Silva and family - the fifth generation of winemakers. Many of the vines planted are over 90 years old, carried over from Bordeaux, pre-phylloxera, by the first generation.

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright and intense ruby red. On the nose, aromas of black cherries and plums with hints of spices. On the palate, flavorsome: round, powerful, with sweet soft tannins and balanced acidity. Long finish.
