/ The 1997 Casa Real was royal, and the ’99 is even better. It’s rich, deep and lavishly oaked. The concentration is intense but it’s not overly tight or tannic. In every way it’s a dead ringer for sweet, luscious fruit-forward Napa Cabernet. Plum, coffee and cream share center stage on the stylish finish.
/ The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Casa Real was the star of the show at this Vina Santa Rita tasting. It was produced from 30-44 year old vines. This wine bursts from the glass with violets, lilies, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, and buttery oak. Its Margaux-like personality is medium to full-bodied, rich, and lush. A myriad of ripe dark fruits are interspersed with toasty oak in this intense, powerful wine. Its character brings to mind a hypothetical blend of Bordeaux and Napa Valley, with an elegantly structured, juicy core of fruit being married with a plush, muscular, opulent quality. This wine's impressively long finish exhibits loads of tannin, yet they are ripe and supple. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018. Bravo! The progress made at Vina Santa Rita over the past few vintages has been truly impressive.
/ Big and brawny, with impressive concentration for the vintage, this touts black currant, fig, bittersweet chocolate and grilled sage flavors followed by powerful, loamy tannins on the finish.
/ Even if this isn't the best Casa Real in recent years, it stands out from the crowd and doesn't have to work hard to do so. The nose is tight and clean, with leather, spice and cherry aromas. The palate is packed with cherry and cassis, and the finish is lively but balanced. Despite a down vintage, this is Chilean Cabernet at its finest.
/ When I was in Chile in January, the winery presented the 1999 Casa Real. It seems clear that Santa Rita Casa Real is on of Chile's benchmark wines.
Top Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon Producers/ This winery's flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a single, dry-farmed vineyard that has an outstanding track record for quality.
Year's Best Chilean Reds/ Attractive dry cherry, cinnamon and chamomile aromas make this firm and sweet, to serve with aged goat cheese.
