Deep ruby. Oak-spicy aromas of clove, nutmeg, cocoa powder, espresso and preserves. The intense spice character carries through in the mouth, where there’s a sweet red berry tone and lush, silky texture. This clearly has great material and is plenty sweet but it’s a shame that the wood is so dominant.
The 2003 Clos Apalta continues an impressive run begun when the wine was first made, in 1997. Owner Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle has recently built a separate winery to handle production, beginning with the 2005 vintage. The grapes come from 60-year-old vines grown in the Apalta vineyards. The 2003 vintage started cool but ended with plenty of warm days to fully ripen the Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon used in this blend.
Loads of ripe fruit, with plum, blackberry and boysenberry flavors pumping through, backed by suave, mocha-infused toast, mineral and spice notes. Long, fleshy finish has some serious grip. Carmenere and Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2007 through 2012.
Inky violet. Vivacious raspberry and candied cherry aromas are strongly underscored by coconut and vanilla, which gain strength with air. Broad, fleshy and sweet, offering an array of red and dark berry preserve flavors, soft tannins and sneaky minerality. Finishes long and with improbable energy for such a rich, concentrated and even liqueur-like wine. Not for those who demand finesse but fans of big-time Napa cabernet should give this a shot.
The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chile's standard-bearers. Displaying aromas of sweet, spicy cassis, the 2002 Clos Apalta is a concentrated, medium to full-bodied wine w... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from in Chile. 2002 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 750ml
Saturated and rich, with meaty, forceful aromas of black fruit, molasses and toasted marshmallows. A blend of Carmenandegrave;re, Cabernet and Merlot thatandrsquo;s full of cassis, black cherry and a light herbaceousness. Lush but structured; a real big boy.
Beautiful color, with vivid boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors that easily handle the layers of vanilla-tinged toast. Roasted herb, briar and black currant notes run through the finish, which shows the firm edge of the vintage, but a superb effort nonetheless. Carmenandegrave;re. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2009.
Clos Apalta is the ultimate expression of Casa Lapostolle's dedication to quality made from the best grapes from our Apalta vineyard. This wine, not produced every year, is a belnd of Merlot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Sauvignon from 60-100 year old pre-phylloxera vines.
