Leave this open long enough and you get out of the immediate austerity of the wine and into the pencil shavings, Portuguese sausage, slightly tannic but juicy and dark cherry notes that pucker at your salivation--drink up.

D/H 2012-2022-The 2007 Barolo is a sexy, radiant wine that captures the essence of the year. Soft and inviting through to the finish, the Barolo possesses tremendous class and balance. Succulent red cherries, licorice, rose petals and spices round out the supple finish. This is another overachieving wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. Score: 92. —Antonio Galloni, October 2011. 27.98 @ryebrook

The name Mirafiore is both new and old, associated as it is with the wine estate in Serralunga d Alba founded by Emanuele, Count of Mirafiore and Fontanafredda, the son of Victor Emmanuel II and Bela Rosin. Mirafiore is an ideal and set as an icon by Farinetti to represent a life of value.

A chewy style, with rich cherry, licorice and tobacco flavors and dense tannins, yet round and open, with a slight firmness still present on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2026.

Succulent red cherries, licorice, rose petals and spices round out the supple finish. This is another overachieving wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022...This is another impressive set of wines from Mirafiore, the newly created spin-off of Fontanafredda, under which all of that estate’s best vineyards are now bottled. The house favors a bold, fruit-driven style even though vinification and aging are strictly traditional. Despite their richness and intensity, the wines possess superb balance, not to mention considerable personality. The success of the entry-level bottlings strongly suggests the Baroli will eventually be even better than these currently releases from the 2007 vintage. Oenologist Danilo Drucco told me he was inspired to recreate the classic style he learned under Beppe Colla at Prunotto, where he worked for five years before coming to Fontanafredda. Here’s to hoping he can pull it off. The first efforts are certainly encouraging...92."WA 10/2011
