Casa Donoso is a French-owned winery near Talca in the center of the Maule Valley, one of the southernmost Chilean wine regions. Although it is wetter and colder than other regions, the fertile soil, ample sunshine, and moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean ensure optimal fruit ripeness. Donoso lies on the site of one of the oldest estates in Chile where the first vines were brought from Bordeaux in the middle of the nineteenth century. Unlike many recently-established vineyards, Donoso’s vineyards have much older vines. Since 1989, the estate has been modernized to international standards.

Overview Chile is a country of amazingly diverse landscapes, with over 4,000 miles of South Pacific coastline on one side and the Andes on the other. Cool maritime winds drift across the Pacific and settle into the winegrowing regions, cooling the grapes and consequently slowing down the ripening process. The Andes protect the vineyards from torrential storms and provide limitless water from the many streams that flow from the mountains. Chile has taken advantage of its near-perfect weather to create approachable wines with depth and character, reflecting many of its sub-regions. In addition to the more famous varietals such a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, Chile is also home to Carmenére; a charming, well-structured grape once mistaken for Merlot through the country’s vineyards.
