The 2010 Tinto (Casa de Santar) is a blend of Touriga Nacional (35%), Alfrocheiro (30%) and Tinta Roriz (35%), aged for 6 months in American oak. Despite the American oak (only 35% new, though), it seems rather clean and fresh, solid in its way but a good example of regional sensibilities. Bright and somewhat tightly wound at the moment, it is a charming Santar Tinto that gradually opens and becomes fruitier. It seems invariably to be a good bargain — in so many vintages it seems like a “can’t miss” buy. Tasty, well balanced and reasonably well structured, it is quite charming. Drink now–2019.
In the Shiraz family of flavors — tart cherry and currant, lots of white pepper and a smooth, rich finish. Use this with anything savory or barbecued.
A refined and well-crafted red, with concentrated flavors of dried cherry, red raspberry and currant, supported by fleshy, medium-grained tannins. Delivers a long finish of tar, spice and smoke. Drink now through 2020.
