Carruades de Lafite Red Bordeaux Blend Pauillac 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Robert Parker scores this wine 87 points and writes: "The elegant second wine, 2001 Carruades de Lafite reveals notions of lead pencil shavings intertwined with cherry, currant, cranberry, and wet stone-like aromas. Drink this medium-bodied, up-front Pauillac over the next decade."

Perhaps at a bad phase of its life. No apparent defects to explain this, but the wine was flat, reminded me of a cheap American wine with more Merlot than typical left bank Bordeaux wines. Fruit is almost all gone after 9 years. Acidity and tannins still present, but overall the wine feels diluted. I had pictured 2001 as similar to 1997 with better longevity potential. This is my 3rd 2001 Bordeaux this week and I feel that the vintage is less appealing than 1997, which offered fruit for a decade at least. Too good for a second wine, a famous commentator said about the 2001 Carruades. This is the 3rd bottle I have of this wine, and I am one to find all sorts of compliments to make on a large variety of wines : not this one, sorry... 84/100 (June 2004, Sept. 2008 and Nov. 10, 2010).
