December 2010. Cancún, México at 22ºC room temp. Conditioned bottle opened at 12ºC, drank at 16-18ºC After 5 years of owning this bottle I finally decided to open it with a friend of mine. This wine can be described in two words: simple & disappointing. The colour was a lovely ruby red (typical Bordeaux). 1st nose of dark red fruits, a little woody and smokey. 2nd nose just simple, a little fruity (strawberry came to mind) and slightly of black pepper. The taste was the most disappointing of all: simple with soft tannins due to age, medium to long finish, a little metallic with quite a light body. In my opinion the wine is not intense (or indeed interesting) enough. Even for a Bordeaux and specially for its age. There is a notable lack of body and texture. I reckon this wine was either not a great vintage to start with (so as to have improved with age) or is past its best. I would drink this wine as I would a young Pinot Noir, with of course, the same food pairing as for a Pinot. To quote Michael Broadbent's on the Dom de Chevalier 1987: 2 stars, Drinkable. (No mention of the 1986) For Broadbent, "on the whole, 1986 produced hard, tannic wines which at best, given time, might - just might- turn out well. But I would not bank on it, except for Mouton [-Rothschild] and just one or two others".
