Carruades de Lafite Pauillac 2018

Member Review by edub:

Wow, a punch of dark fruit and elegance! Fragrant nose, very intriguing, floral with black cherries, velvet like, silky elegance of big time pleasure. This has mellowed out and has become such a refined beauty since the UGCB. The initial entry for the first hour had a slight olive-cassis tone that reminded me very much of the 2007 Haut Brion. Within the next hour of decanting this wine, it fleshed out with more dark cherry, velvet texture, super focus and balance, bursting with fruit along the great mid palate and finish, yet delicate at the same time. Integrated and seductive fruit already. This Domaine de Chevalier 2008 has less of that vanilla cream-oak than the 06, and for the better. The tobacco and tar start to unfold after the third hour. This wine is already singing at this young stage: July 18th, 2011, enjoy it while its fresh for the next several years. I'm sure it has great ability to age, but this is coming out of the gate in front, ready...open and seamless. I recommend consuming the first few hours while decanted to experience the magic while it unfolds. Certainly one of the stars of the vintage, and ahead of most left bank wines of 2008.

droit élégant, fin, sans extra puissance pour un Carruades...

Gorgeous, refined wine. This is my first taste of the Carruades, and certainly don't want it to be my last! I was surprised it drank so well in 2009, but two hours or so in the decanter did wonders. We did a classic pairing of this wine with steak bordelaise, and it was tremendous. The lovely tannins managed the rich steak and bone marrow perfectly. Wonderful!

Perhaps at a bad phase of its life. No apparent defects to explain this, but the wine was flat, reminded me of a cheap American wine with more Merlot than typical left bank Bordeaux wines. Fruit is almost all gone after 9 years. Acidity and tannins still present, but overall the wine feels diluted. I had pictured 2001 as similar to 1997 with better longevity potential. This is my 3rd 2001 Bordeaux this week and I feel that the vintage is less appealing than 1997, which offered fruit for a decade at least. Too good for a second wine, a famous commentator said about the 2001 Carruades. This is the 3rd bottle I have of this wine, and I am one to find all sorts of compliments to make on a large variety of wines : not this one, sorry... 84/100 (June 2004, Sept. 2008 and Nov. 10, 2010).

The Carruades de Lafite is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon 29% Merlot 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It has quite a floral bouquet with touches of dried violet petals infusing the crisp blackberry fruit laced with cedar and a touch of smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry starting with black fruit but gently moving to more red fruit towards the finish. There is not the usual persistency but it has pleasing purity and approachability. Tasted April 2014. Neal Martin

Full and powerfully concentrated this wine has dense acidity sweet black fruits and very fine tannins. The concentration is enormous but it expresses itself through the prism of smooth velvet-textured tannins. Wine Enthusiast.

Very high-toned today, with a whiff of talcum powder giving way to bright sweet pea and lime notes. The tightly wound finish lets herb and fleur de sel flecks peek out, but theres serious length in reserve.-J.M. Wine Spectator. This has a richness that stands out for 2011, delivering roasted fig and plum flavors, with good smoldering tobacco and black tea notes, before the tangy damson plum and iron elements more typical of the vintage finally start to emerge on the finish.... Aromas of sweet tobacco, berry and chocolate follow through to a full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a medium finish. Slightly hollow midpalate but very nicely done. Second wine of Lafite. Best

Serious and structured, this is a concentrated dark-hued wine. It has all the acidity of the vintage while also showing firm tannins. A dry and powerful second wine. - R.V. Wine Enthusiast. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild Carruades de Lafite 1500ml

Amazing nose of dried fruits from peaches to apples to mangos. Pink grapefruit too. Full and very powerful white with an incredible length and intensity. Its like a beautiful block of velvet in your mouth. It goes on for minutes. It becomes so miner... James Suckling. A Bordeaux Blanc wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Domaine de Chevalier 1500ml
