Carruades de Lafite Bottle 2008
Robert Parker scores this wine 91-93 points and writes: "The 2008 Carruades de Lafite, made from yields of 46 hectoliters per hectare, is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Revealing an inky/ruby/purple color that is slightly less dense than the grand vin’s, it offers up beautiful aromas of graphite, smoke, black currants, and cedar. Very sexy in the fleshy style of the 2003, it is a succulent, hedonistic turn-on. Moreover, given the freshness and acid profile, it should drink well for 15-20 years. Interestingly, Lafite Rothschild’s manager, Charles Chevalier, told me there was not much flavor in the grapes in mid-September, but a month later, after four weeks of extraordinary weather, they believed something profound may have happened given the flavor development. Again, the historically long period between flowering and harvest, and very low yields are part of the secret to the great success of wines such as this."

Wow, a punch of dark fruit and elegance! Fragrant nose, very intriguing, floral with black cherries, velvet like, silky elegance of big time pleasure. This has mellowed out and has become such a refined beauty since the UGCB. The initial entry for the first hour had a slight olive-cassis tone that reminded me very much of the 2007 Haut Brion. Within the next hour of decanting this wine, it fleshed out with more dark cherry, velvet texture, super focus and balance, bursting with fruit along the great mid palate and finish, yet delicate at the same time. Integrated and seductive fruit already. This Domaine de Chevalier 2008 has less of that vanilla cream-oak than the 06, and for the better. The tobacco and tar start to unfold after the third hour. This wine is already singing at this young stage: July 18th, 2011, enjoy it while its fresh for the next several years. I'm sure it has great ability to age, but this is coming out of the gate in front, ready...open and seamless. I recommend consuming the first few hours while decanted to experience the magic while it unfolds. Certainly one of the stars of the vintage, and ahead of most left bank wines of 2008.
