Bright ruby. Mineral-driven aromas of cherry and dark berries show good clarity and a hint of peppery spice. Dry and focused, offering zesty dark fruit flavors and a firm note of cherry pit. Shows good intensity on the finish, which features tangy acidity and assertive spiciness.
The current releases, all of them excellent to outstanding values, begin with the unoaked 2010 Carro, a blend of 50% Monastrell, 35% Syrah, with the balance Tempranillo and Merlot. Notes of game, underbrush, and blueberry inform the nose of this pure, spicy, pleasure-bent red. Drink it over the next 3 years.
Ruby-red. Spicy, floral aromas of bright cherry and rhubarb, complicated by minerals and pepper. Fresh red berry fruit shows very good energy and precision, with a light mineral touch on the back. This boasts impressive focus and complexity for the price.
There are 6,000 cases of the 2004 Carro, a tank-fermented and aged, un-oaked blend of 50% Mourverde, 20% Syrah, 20% Tempranillo, and 10% Merlot. It reveals terrific fruit intensity, copious black cherries and wild mountain berries, and notions of licorice, flowers, roasted meats, and chocolate. With supple tannin, low acidity, and abundant fruit, it is a joy to drink as well as a spectacular value. Consume it over the next 12-18 months. This estate is one of the top discoveries of all my tastings.
The 2005 Carro is an unoaked blend of 50% Monastrell, 20% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Medium ruby-colored, it has a lovely perfume of damp earth, pepper, cassis, and blackberry. This is followed by a sumptuous wine with layers of ripe, sweet fruit, excellent balance, and no hard edges which totally belie its ridiculously silly price point. The wine is an awesome value. I had thoughts of a higher score but readers might think I'd lost my mind. The Bellum project, in which Ole Imports is involved, started in 2002. It is dedicated to showing what can be achieved from 100% old-vine Monastrell in the up-and-coming D.O. of Yecla. It goes without saying that the price-to-quality relationship of these wines is extraordinary.
Deep violet. Fresh red and dark berry aromas and flavors are complemented by notes of dried rose and cracked pepper. Begins rather light but gains weight with air and finishes with good persistence and a slightly bitter edge.
The 2008 Carro is 50% Monastrell, 20% Syrah, 20% Tempranillo, and 10% Merlot fermented and aged in stainless steel. Purple-colored, it reveals a fragrant bouquet, of violets, damp earth, incense, and blueberry. On the palate it has surprising grip and concentration for its humble price and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. It will provide pleasure over the next three years.
