Carpineto Chianti Classico 2016

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Dark and savory aromas of blueberry and blackberry with smoky dark chocolate and mineral earth. Concentrated fruit flavors of strawberry, cherry and raspberry on the palate, with chewy tannins and black olives towards the finish.

80% Sangiovese, 20% Canaiolo and other red grape varieties Damp tobacco, earthy, and a bit funky come together on the nose which is decidedly not fruit driven but complex and nuanced. Big fruit underpinned by tannins are a bit hunky and inelegant fills the mouth on entry. Decidedly young and raw, this shows off a rather old school profile with leathery, dried fruit character and earthy spice dominating the palate and the modest finish. it’s not for everyone but a nice change of pace. 86pts

Meh, I really expected much more from a Classico. Nothing like the recent Isole Olena I opened.

Carpineto takes its name from the Greek, carpos, meaning fruit. Founded in 1967 Carpineto quickly developed an international, award-winning reputation for consistently elegant wines. Carpineto began by producing a world-class Chianti Classico. This wine comes from vineyards planted to a minimum of 80% Sangiovese and a maximum of 20% of Canaiolo and other red grape varietals. Maceration of the skins in the must and fermentation all take place at controlled low temperatures. After the final blend is assembled, the wine is aged for six months in oak casks. The wine is bottled during the second year, then bottle aged in temperature controlled cellars for 4-6 months before release. Wine Spectator scored this 89 points saying "Though medium-bodied, this red is rich and chunky, with tar, earth, cherry and leather flavors. Finishes fresh and long, if on the muscular side. Drink now through 2018."

Aromas of violets, berries and cherries make up the bouquet. A full-bodied wine that is well-balanced with a velvety texture and rounded tannins.

Famed here in the U.S. for their Toscana rosso — the Dogajolo — Carpineto also produces this delicious, traditionally-styled Chianti Classico that is drier, with delightful acidity which lends itself to a greater variety of food pairings. Tart cherry and cranberry fruits focus the faint spice notes, leading to a lip-smacking, refreshing finish.

Broad and robust, packing cherry, currant and spice flavors into a muscular frame. Balanced in an exuberant way, showing moderate length. Drink now through 2018. 25,000 cases made.

Fermented in stainless steel and aged in oak casks, the wine is then bottle aged in temperature-controlled cellars. Full bodied with a velvety texture, this Chianti is abundantly aromatic with notes of violets, berries, and cherries.
