The vineyard was first reported in 1648 when a local landlord, Denis de Mullet of La Tour StLambert rented it to a farmer in exchange for the wines produced. Caronne is derived from "Carona" the name of a local spring source, and Gemme a corruption of "James". In the middle-ages the locality was a parish on the grounds of a subsidiary to the Templar Headquaters at nearby Benon a few kilometers inland. Pilgrims on their way to Saint Jacques de Compostelle, having crossed the estuary from Blaye, would rest here before continuing their way across the Landes to the Spanish Border. The Parish was abolished during the Revolution and it is about this time that the first records of wine production at Caronne appear. In 1900 ownership of Caronne passed to Emile and Eugène Borie. The sons of Eugène would later cede their shares to their uncle and purchase Ch. Batailley and later Ducru-Beaucaillou while Emile's descendents would remain the sole owners of Caronne until this day. The property is now managed by Jean, grandson of Emile and François, his nephew. Read less

The other wine we tasted, next to the Ch Pipeau - so we had a right bank bordeaux, and this one is a left bank bordeaux. In the beginning, this was closed, hard to drink, very tannic and has an astringent taste. After it was left to breathe for a while and with food, it showed a lot better. Noses of cherries and a bit of vanilla. It was earthy, slightly peppery, some minerals. Tannins were a bit acidic, finish was a bit hot but lingering. It does show a lot of character. I'd love to open one of these again in a couple more years, when its been aged for 10 yrs or more. Also need to have a piece of steak laying around when you open this one. WA 88-90; WS 89-91; WE 91

Young and slightly tannic with medium body and raisin with leather bouquet. Ripe fruit taste and opaque color. This wine will improve and should be left in the cellar until 2011 and beyond.

Considerable depth of flavor here, with complex ripe tannins, topping the dense black fruits. Therersquo;s spice from the wood, some stalky tannins from the fruit, and an edge of youth that will need 3ndash;4 years to show its potential.

Complex, classic Bordeaux elegance with a depth and purity of fruit found only in the greatest of vintages. Blackberries, cedar, anise and wild blueberries flavor this medium- to full-bodied Cabernet blend. Young and balanced, this wine holds promise for 10ndash;15 years of enjoyment.

[Barrel tasting] Lots of berry and chocolate character with hints of vanilla. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Impressive. Almost hard to believe, itrsquo;s so good. Almost 92ndash;94.

Offers raisin and dried fruit, with very ripe fruit aromas and coffee and oak undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. This is pumped up, but I like the flamboyant character. Best after 2011.

Loads of ripe plum and berry, with hints of mineral. Medium- to full-bodied, with lovely integrated tannins and a medium finish. Best after 2005.

The aromas here are seriously woody, and that problem also appears on the palate. It has fruit, but the weight to balance is not there yet. This should develop over the next 4-5 years, but the wood is always going to be a major feature.

Chacirc;teau Caronnes Ste Gemme is a rare bargain from the stellar 2000 vintage. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, itrsquo;s rich ruby color indicates sweetly blackberry and cassis aromas. Full with firm tannins, itrsquo;s loaded with black currant, cedar, and twiggy mint. For the price, itrsquo;s worth grabbing at least two bottles: one to drink now, and one to cellar for a few more years!
