What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Pure fruit with an icy cool, ashy edge. There is a nice nuttiness here from the sweet oak and lovely fresh fruit with a touch of candied apple and watermelon adding depth to the spicy berries. Notes of eucalyptus, violets, almond husk and vanilla add complexity. Nice purity yet the tannins remain a bit aggressive. There is very bright pink peppercorn and iron tinged red cherry fruit on the finish with subtle anise seed and cardamon notes with a touch of pollen and bitter citrus zest highlights. Long, zesty, earthy, coffee and cream finish gets cut a bit short as the tannins begin to contract. Intense read more...stuff and still in need of a year or two to fully tame the tannins which may always dominate this wine. 91pts    (hide)
