Carol Shelton Rocky Reserve Zinfandel 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark earthy, mineral and balsamic on the nose with dark fruit and pressed floral accents. Rich and seamless on entry, this has fine tension in the mouth, a little dusty though with super depth on the palate and deeply steeped flavors, all blackberry and black curranty The super fine yet firm tannins keep this firm and focused through the long finish which shows some blueberry jam notes a dark assertive spice flavors. The oak is very well judged offering gentle support to the dark and mineral fruit flavors. 92pts

Big and fruit bomb nose with intense orange peel and stewy raspberry fruit that is quite complex with tones of vanilla and game accenting the fruit. Gains in the glass adding toasted hazelnut, bitter cocoa and earth, clove tinged baked plum fruits. Surprisingly lean on entry with an intense attack of very spicy fruits and fine herbal top notes. The mid-palate reveals a core of sweet, earthy fruit rich with strawberry and raspberry tones. In a lighter style with lots of polished tannins and while it is a bit lean it really speaks with excellent soil tones. Lacks the chewy weight of many Zins but makes up for it with a fine, elegant feel and remarkably transparent red fruits. 94pts

Very nice. Loaded with blackberry, casis, spice and a hint of mocha. Great fruit and balance.

I?ve liked this wine over the years because of the Bordeaux-like elegance it achieves without losing Zin?s wild, briary side. Here, the wine is softer and a little sweeter than in the past, given the hot vintage, but it?s still balanced and rich in

Wine Tasting NotesThe Rocky Reserveit is a classic Zin, crammed with the inky blackberry fruit and black pepper spice for which the Dry Creek Valley is famous, with lots of interesting vanilla and spices from the variety of oaks. It is well structured for longer age, but can be consumed with delight in the near-term as well!
