Carmenère Single Vineyard Valle de Aconcagua 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Purpurrot.

Errazuriz was founded in 1870 in the Aconcagua Valley, 65 miles north of the capital, Santiago, and at the foot of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the seven summits of the world. Recognizing that this valley was ideal for growing grapes, with its hot, dry summers and cool Pacific Ocean breezes, Don Maximiano Errazuriz sent for the finest clones from France, and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard. Today, the tradition lives on with Eduardo Chadwick, the fifth generation of his family to lead this exceptional estate. Eduardo’s work has been colossal, bringing Errazuriz into a new era where it is acknowledged as a producer of world-class wines, and opened eyes around the globe as to Chile’s incredible and diverse sites. As an estate winery, Errazuriz strives to produce the finest wines through meticulous attention to every stage of viticulture and vinification, from grape growing in the Aconcagua, Casablanca and Curico valleys, to winemaking with the most natural techniques. An emphasis is placed on the delicate handling of the wines, with the aim of producing wines with elegance and complexity. It is this dynamism and passion for wine that has made Errazuriz such an internationally respected producer of quality wines. Check us out at www.errazuriz.com Read less

A Chilean wine from the Viña Errázuriz who have been making wines for more than 130 years. With a fun label that looks like it is handwritten in beautiful cursive text this wine pours with a deep, almost opaque ruby/maroon color. It looks like liquid mahogany. The first aroma is of spicy, bitter, dark chocolate and black cherries that is so intoxicating it almost brought me to tears. I didn't want to taste it in case I did actually start crying. I took another smell, deeper this time and it brought memories of bonfires in England of smoky cedar wood with a hint of cassis and fresh herbs. On the palate the wine is smooth and biting at the same time. Tastes of dark chocolate covered cherries abound in this full of flavor wine. A finish that remains and tantalizes to the last taste. This is a true curl up on the sofa type of wine. I wouldn't pair it with anything. I would do these things... you, if you are lucky a loved one, the wine, a sofa, perhaps an open fire and some Adele playing in the background. A perfect evening.

A step up is the purple-colored 2009 Carmenere Single Vineyard (Vinedos Max). Notions of sage, thyme, balsamic, and blueberry lead to a superficial but pleasant wine with ample savory fruit and moderate length. Drink it over the next 4–5 years.

Leather, raisin, earth and lightly baked berry aromas precede a woody, vanilla-infused palate with blackberry and spicecake flavors. Balanced and lively on the tongue, with a dry, barrel-spiced finish. Solid and appealing, but a little oaky.
