Carmelo Patti Red Blend Gran Assemblage 2002
Winemaker: Carmelo Patti. 100% of the wine sees a mix of first use French oak. Rich, earthy aromas of black cherry, cassis, and crumpled leaves. On the palate the wine shows impressive texture, with soft berry flavors and slight bottle age character. Very complex and old world, finishes long.
Even decanted and with asado steak I watched being cooked in Mendoza, this one gets docked because I compared it to the 2003. Carmelo Patti definitely shows his love with this remarkably complex blend. Markedly complex and gratifying, it remains quite unlike any other similar blends that I've enjoyed. Have with game or otherwise [char]grilled red meat. It will certainly remain the centerpiece!
I opened a bottle of the 2002 tonight. I didn't decant it but let it breathe for an hr or more. It's drinkable but I think it is rapidly going "over the hill". Maybe the other half of the bottle will have opened up by tomorrow night.
