Carmel Road Pinot Noir 2016

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Light cherry and raspberry aromas are immediately jumping out of the glass. Juicy and bright mouthfeel, there's not a ton of acidity but it's certainly present over the light earthy note and the fruit. Predominantly cherry flavors leading the charge here with a dose of sugary plums and a light touch of oak on the finish which is a bit tight with touches of tar and hints of vanilla. Drink now and enjoy.

Carmel Road Winery is located in the heart of Monterey County where the air is crisp and the tempo is relaxed and measured. Most mornings our vineyards are shrouded in fog. Most afternoons a brisk Pacific Ocean wind blows southward along the ridge tops and benchlands of Salinas Valley delivering fresh, cool maritime air. For years our region was considered too cold and windy to grow world-class grapes. Today, Monterey boasts some of the most highly-acclaimed AVAs in all of California. Since 1999 Carmel Road has been producing stunning Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from some of Monterey's finest benchland vineyards using a mix of proprietary and traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques. Bright fruit greets the nose though it gains a jammy accent fairly quickly built upon a base of smoky, toasty oak vanilla oak, though there are some subtle herbal accent here adding some detail. Round, supple and mouth filling, this is a crowd pleaser to be sure. The balance here is excellent with plump, sweet black cherry and almost black currant fruit on the palate framed nicely by well judged oak notes. The backend shows off black cherry and sassafras notes and leads into a moderately long, slightly tacky finish enlivened with hints of grapefruit peel. 87pts

This smells a touch heavy with plums and forest floor aromas on the nose with a light dandelion green top note. A bit chunky in the mouth, this also seems a bit soft, which may make it appear sweeter than it is. The flavors of black cherry add complicating notes of black olive and toasted nuts on the mid-palate and then a hint of toasted marshmallow on the back end.The finish is a bit dry and shows some vanilla streaks over light sour cherry fruit. This lacks some energy and definition in the mouth and never really gets going in the glass. 85pts

The owner of the restaurant where we were dining recommended this wine. I LOVED it. It had a zip to it, peppery, but very smooth...hard to describe. For me it had the perfect flavor!

This was a nicely balanced Pinot with decent dark red fruit, leather and spices. Soft drinking and a little bit bolder than some of the other Pinots out there. Would be nice with dinner but no food necessary with this one.

Rich Pinot, dark red fruit, supple raspberry/cherry. Velvety & an eternal finish. Paired with Ahi Poke.

Fruit-forward, with flavors of raspberries, cherries, mulberries, cranberries, pomegranates and persimmon, balanced with savory notes. Oak adds just a touch of smoky wood. Racy acidity and a saline character that's classic in Monterey wines.

Sourced from various Monterey vineyard sites, Carmel Road's entry-level Pinot Noir has bright red cherry and warm spice aromatics with notes of mineral and chocolate.

The 2010 is supple and rich with flavors of red berries, warm spice, earth, and chocolate, along with mineral characteristics that are reflections of this cool climate region. The toasty finish is silky and long.

Burgundian in style, this Pinot Noir is not for the timid. Currant is present on the nose continuing on to the mid palate exhibiting dark fruit and notes of tobacco and leather. It has a long finish with just a soupçon of anise.
