Carmel Road Monterey Pinot Gris Riesling. Gewurztraminer. Chardonnay. Marsanne. Pinot Grigio Central Coast Monterey 2009

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Very ripe and new oaky, but the acidity is so vibrant, it provides that much-needed balanced kick. Flavor-wise, this Chard is a blast of orange Slurpee, pineapple tart, vanilla cregrave;me brucirc;leacute;e and cinnamon spice. it sure is an easy wine to drink.

Most afternoons a brisk Pacific Ocean wind blows southward along the ridge tops and benchlands of Salinas Valley delivering fresh, cool maritime air. For years our region was considered too cold and windy to grow world-class grapes. Today, Monterey boasts some of the most highly-acclaimed AVAs in all of California. Since 1999 Carmel Road has been producing stunning Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from some of Monterey's finest benchland vineyards using a mix of proprietary and traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques. Soft floral and white peach notes greet you on the nose. The palate is also soft and smooth, with light fruity hints of pear and kumquat. On the finish, there is a touch of butter with some mineral and nutty flavors.

Crisp acidity marks this dry Chardonnay, with forward flavors of pineapples, pears and papaya, grounded with a pleasant minerality and enriched with vanilla oak. Itrsquo;s a wine to drink now.

I was impressed with Carmel Roadrsquo;s 2008 Chardonnay Monterey. With a light greenish hue to its color and loads of tropical fruit intermixed with a hint of orange blossom, this medium-bodied Chardonnay is not as weighty as the Arroyo Seco, but itrsquo;s tasty in a medium-bodied, fresh, lively, cool-climate style.

This Monterey Chardonnay is rich, bold and beautifully balanced. It possesses an intriguing combination of grapefruit, pear and vanilla imparted by traditional barrel fermentation.
