Carlisle Zinfandel Sonoma County 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

My 1st place wine, the group’s 4th A bit creamy on the nose but very deep and perfumy with hints of toasty spice, briar, and orange oil supporting sweet, slightly plummy and leathery fruit. Supple, with a nice blend of power and freshness, this is bright and zesty on the palate, full of black raspberry fruit and gorgeously detailed leather, plum skin, wood spice and creamy coffee notes that stick to the palate and linger on the long finish. Absolutely ready to go and delicious. 93pts

Carlisle Winery:
Welcome to Carlisle Winery & Vineyards! We are a small Sonoma County winery specializing in the production of old-vine, vineyard designated zinfandels and red Rhone varieties (syrah, grenache, mourvèdre, and petite sirah). While we like our wines to be bold, rich, and intensely flavored, each reflecting a sense of place, its origins in the vineyard, we also strive to create wines of balance, complexity, and perhaps most importantly, pleasure.

Fresh berries and creamy vanilla make for an attractive if simple nose. This pops on entry, with bright tart strawberry that shows fine focus and picks up a touch of wild raspberry and subtle spice on the mid-palate. While showing a certain sense of delicacy and a lovely texture, this is a touch simple. 89 points

Was a bit anxious about this one since it was a gift from a neighbor/friend and storage was questionable. Initial taste on opening was that this was a bit "hot", which at 15.8% abv wasn't unexpected. Visual inspection showed only slight bricking on the rim with a nice ruby core. On the nose is more heat and some smoke and dry earth. After 1-2 hour decant the alcohol has blown off a bit. There is ripe black cherry along with a hint of leafiness (?), baking spice, very ripe green plum, medium acidity and medium fine grained tannins that sit for a good while on the sides of the tongue.

Dark and jammy, with black raspberry and fruit cake aromas and luscious flavors of blackberry, licorice and smoky cracked pepper. Drink now through 2020.

The least expensive offering is the gorgeous 2012 Zinfandel Sonoma, which comes from many different sources, but all are old vine Zinfandel and the so-called Mixed Black vineyards that were planted by Italian immigrants, usually in the late 1800s and early 1900s (prior to Prohibition). This is a 1,000-case cuvee whose vines were planted between 1881 and 1926. A dense ruby color is followed by copious aromas of brambleberries, black cherries, spice box and pepper. This pure, full-bodied (14.8% alcohol) Zinfandel hits the palate with loads of hedonistic joy. Consume this beautiful Zinfandel during its first 3–4 years of life.

Vivid ruby. Emphatically fruity nose displays scents of ripe boysenberry, plum and cherry, with a touch of dried rose adding complexity. On the palate, silky dark berry and floral pastille flavors put on weight with air. Finishes on a mocha note, with gripping tannins adding structure. As usual, this bottling delivers outstanding value.

The 2007 Zinfandel Sonoma exhibits loads of briery, berry fruit, a big kiss of licorice as well as spice, and no hard edges. Plenty of glycerin, a heady, succulent mouthfeel, and abundant pleasure giving qualities make this a fun wine to drink in its... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Zinfandel wine from California in USA. 2007 Carlisle Winery Zinfandel Sonoma County 750ml
