Carlisle Zinfandel Russian River Valley Papera Ranch 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

92-94 points Robert Parker: A killer effort is the 2015 Zinfandel Papera Ranch, from a vineyard planted in 1934, and made from 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan. This is a good-sized wine, given its 15.4% alcohol, but like all of Mike Officer's wines, the alcohol never shows. Moreover, he clearly gives the fruit plenty of attention so that it can strut its ripeness and full-bodied character, given the fact that he rarely uses more than 20-25% new French oak, and of course, the wines are bottled with no clarification by fining or filtering. This should drink well for up to a decade or more. Drink: 2016-2026. (Oct 2016)

Wow! Big, big, big zin. Decanted, first taste was too hot. Let it open for just a half hour and the alcohol blew right off. Big fat blackberry, blueberry nose, luscious in the mouth with nice round tannins on the smooth long finish. Got better and better with each glass. Had the last taste at hour 2. This wine is a steal at $35..

Supple and well-structured, with a succulent core of fruit. Floral boysenberry and licorice aromas lean toward sleekly jammy flavors of blueberry, cherry, brown baking spices and pepper. Drink now through 2021. 658 cases made.

Another fabulous effort, the 2012 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is composed of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan that achieved 15.4% alcohol. One of my favorites in the tasting (although that’s splitting hairs), it exhibits a beautiful black fruit-scented nose with spice, pepper and a roasted meaty-like character. Dense, rich, full-bodied, beautifully balanced and impressively pure as well as layered, there are around 700 cases of this stunning Zinfandel made from vines planted in 1934. Consume it over the next 5–7 years.

Inky purple. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit liqueur, incense and candied flowers, with an intense spicy overtone. Sappy, incisive and pure, offering densely packed boysenberry and cassis flavors sharpened by juicy acidity. Weighty and seamless in texture, finishing with excellent clarity and smooth, slow-building tannins. This substantial zin would be great with braised red meats.

A dollop of Carignane seems to give the 2012 Zinfandel Papera Ranch gorgeous aromatic lift to play off the wine’s deep layers of fruit. Silky tannins support sweet red fruit, flowers, spices and licorice in a sexy Zinfandel that should drink beautifully right out of the gate. The blend is 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignane.

Carlisle’s 2011 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is all about red fruit, lifted aromatics and silky tannins. A highly representative, varietally expressive Zinfandel, the 2011 is utterly convincing. An exotic melange of dried roses, mint, wild flowers and sage rings out on the silky, polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2026.

Bright purple. Highly perfumed, spice-accented dark berry and incense aromas show impressive clarity and energy. Smooth and seamless on the palate, offering vibrant blackberry preserve and cherry-vanilla flavors and notes of candied flowers and allspice. Finishes with alluring sweetness and excellent length, leaving smoke and floral notes behind. These vines were reportedly planted in 1934.

Jammy black raspberry and smoked pepper aromas lead to dense yet zesty cherry, sage and anise flavors that still carry ripe but firm tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2017.
