Editorial Reviews for Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Vineyard
My 5th place wine, the group’s tied for 2nd jammy, spicy and chocolatey on the nose, this has obvious vanilla oak and some dried jerky spiciness on the nose along with very pure and bright aromas of raspberry jam. Supple, seamless and almost soft in the mouth with tannins that caress the palate with a hint of creaminess. This fills the mouth with black cherry and black raspberry fruit all framed by subtle hints of briary spice and cocoa. The most Zinfandel of the wines tonight, this shows fine length on the finish, but the midpalate intensity is what sets this apart. 92pts

Inky purple. Sexy, deeply pitched dark fruit liqueur, floral pastille and pit fruit aromas show superb clarity and power, with a spicy element adding lift. Smooth and voluptuous in character, offering intense blueberry and boysenberry flavors that coat the palate while maintaining a sense of vibrancy. Finishes sweet and long, with velvety tannins providing gentle grip and shape. Borders on decadent, in a good way.
Another knock-out offering is the 2012 Zinfandel Montafi Ranch, a blend of 89% Zinfandel and 11% mixed blacks (Alicante Bouchet, Grand Noir, Peloursin, Aubun, Trousseau and a handful of others). Very rich with a seamless, full-bodied style, this wine is loaded with black and red fruits, spice and subtle oak in addition to well-integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol. This big, voluptuously-textured, full-throttle Zin should drink nicely for 7–8 years.
Deeply structured and still showing its youth, with boysenberry and fresh sage aromas leading to concentrated flavors of tart blueberry, anise and cracked pepper. Finishes with firm tannins. Best from 2013 through 2017.
Inky purple. Highly complex aromas of black raspberry, candied rose and pungent herbs. Expansive, supple red and dark fruit preserve flavors show serious heft but are finely etched and braced by tangy minerality. Quite suave and pliant, with excellent finishing cut and length. This impeccably balanced wine is from 83-year-old vines, according to Officer, including an 11% mix of alicante bouschet, grand noir, petite sirah, peloursin, bastardo and “who knows what else.”
Composed of 89% Zinfandel and 11% mixed blacks, the dense purple-hued 2009 Zinandel Montafi Ranch (a vineyard planted in 1926) is phenomenal. Dark, jammy black raspberry notes intermixed with sweet black cherries, licorice, charcoal and underbrush are present in this complex, full-bodied, massive yet impressively well-balanced offering. It will drink exceptionally well for 7–8 years.
