Carlisle Vineyard Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2013

External Review:

The 2007 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is a combination of 93% Zinfandel and 7% mixed blacks. Although slightly less substantial than the Montafi Ranch and Carlisle Vineyard, it offers up elegant notes of blueberries, raspberries, crushed rocks, and white flowers. This is a pure, rich, concentrated Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 5-7 years.

Bright ruby. Compelling fresh, spicy bouquet of raspberry, blackberry and dried flowers. Firm, sharply focused dark berry flavors are framed by fine-grained tannins, picking up a spicy quality with air. No excess fat on this elegant, balanced zin, which finishes with gentle grip and excellent persistence.

Glass-staining purple. A compelling bouquet of black raspberry, blueberry, sandalwood incense and potpourri is strikingly pure and expansive. Deep, energetic red and dark berry flavors manage to be both powerful and graceful, with silky tannins providing structure and back-end grip. I wouldn't hesitate to drink this sexy wine now but I'd bet it will reward another four or five years of patience.

Produced from a vineyard planted in 1927, the dark plum/ruby-hued 2003 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (86% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet, Carignan, and who knows what else) displays tremendous power allied with surprising elegance and finesse - a nearly impossible combination for old vine Zinfandel made in a pedal-to-the-metal style. Nevertheless, the use of French oak, massaging of this rustic varietal into something with finesse and elegance (the secret is probably the old vines), and bottling without filtration, has resulted in a wine with gorgeous blackberry, raspberry, peppery notes, refreshing, vibrant acidity, huge depth, and a multilayered palate. This superb Zinfandel should last for 5-7 years.

A real knockout. Bold and intense yet complex, with ripe cherry fruit deftly balanced by vibrant acidity. Offers floral aromas with notes of black raspberry, pepper and lingering Asian spice that lead to full but fleshy tannins. Drink now through 2015.

The same can be said for the 2006 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard, which exhibits a dark ruby/purple color in addition to vivid aromatics of earth, new saddle leather, pepper, black raspberries, sweet kirsch, and smoke. Full-bodied, rich, ripe, and pure, it is a total hedonistic as well as intellectual turn-on. Mike Officer is quickly rising to the top of the qualitative pyramid when it comes to Zinfandel, and more recently, Petit Sirah and Syrah. Working from old vine Zinfandel vineyards in Dry Creek, Sonoma, and Russian River, he is giving some of Napa's top-notch Zinfandel producers, such as Biale and Turley, a run for their money. Starting as a home winemaker in 1998, Officer is now zeroing in on a 5,000 case production of wines that are poster children for hedonism and exuberant joy. Carlisle's 2007s reveal that vintage's luscious fruit. Brilliant winemaking, a highly committed proprietor, and extraordinary fair prices make Carlisle a no-brainer for wine consumers looking for fun.

The 2007 Zinfandel Sonoma exhibits loads of briery, berry fruit, a big kiss of licorice as well as spice, and no hard edges. Plenty of glycerin, a heady, succulent mouthfeel, and abundant pleasure giving qualities make this a fun wine to drink in its first 4-5 years of life.
