One of the curiosities that Mike Officer produces, and a wonderful one at that, is his 2006 Two Acres, a remarkable wine that, in this vintage, is a blend of 75% Mourvedre, 10% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignan, the rest Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. From a vineyard planted in 1910 with yields of 1.7 tons of fruit per acre, this is high-octane Mourvedre with amazing notes of smoked game, beef blood, ground pepper, blueberry, and that classic Mourvedre smell of damp tree bark. A full-bodied, powerful, and distinctive wine that is filled with soul and personality, it is amazing. I am sure it will age well for at least a decade, but who could resist it for that long?

I have always loved Mike Officer's Two Acres proprietary red, and the 2007 (a blend of 84% Mourvedre and the rest Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouchet, and Syrah) is a surprisingly feminine, elegant effort. It would be fascinating to put this wine in a line-up of grand cru red Burgundies given its almost Pinot Noir-like characteristics of forest floor, mushrooms, smoky, and subtle meaty barbecue notes. Blue and red fruits dominate this remarkably suave red that must be tasted to be believed. Even the most talented taster would probably not guess that there is 84% Mourvedre in the blend.
The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Two Acres does not possess the volume and power of its 2004 sibling, but it is a ripe, full-bodied, rich offering exhibiting plenty of blue and red fruits intermixed with crushed rocks, licorice, underbrush, and fores... This is a sturdy, rustic, old-fashioned field blend anchored by two-thirds Mourvèdre. Firmly tannic and tightly wound. Hints of wild berry, tar and cherry wrestle with some chewy tannins. Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Valdepeñas and Alicante Bouchet. Drin... Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 2002 Carlisle Winery Two Acres 750ml
