Carl Schmitt-Wagner Riesling Spätlese Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg 2006

Member Review by Philip James:

Nice sweet almond and honey nose. Very rich and golden, with a lot of residual sugar, but enough acidity to keep it in check.

Succulent flavors of white peach, kumquat and starfruit are floral and fragrant, backed by crisp, zesty acidity. It's clean and focused, finishing with juicy length.

Coffee, sea spray, caraway, apricot, and red delightfully scent and flavor the juicy and engaging Schmitt-Wagner 2009 Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg Riesling Spatlese. Lush suggestions of ripe melon and subtle stoniness and an exotic hint of cocoa on the lightly-creamy palate lead to a satisfyingly long finish not quite as distinctively delicious today as the corresponding Kabinett. But this wine will be worth following for at least 15 years.

Revealing high levels of SO2, the smoky 2003 Riesling Spatlese Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg is a wine that will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring for its sulfur to be absorbed. It displays excellent depth, a Pouilly-Fume-like flintiness, and notes of spiced apples in its tightly wound character. Anticipated maturitry: 2006-2012.

This delicate wine showcases Riesling's feminine, floral side. Could those be lilacs? Green apple and citrus flavors linger seductively on the finish.

A friendlier, more generous wine, the 2001 Riesling Spätlese Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg A.P. #1302 exhibits aromas of fresh, ripe pears and apples. Harmonious, elegant, and lush, this excellent value is a forward, pretty wine. Spices, pears, and white flowers can be found in its light to medium-bodied personality.

Backward and unevolved. Waxy, with racy acidity, this is a great young Riesling. Packed with dry extract and hard-edged today, yet there's density, and deeply wrought tropical fruit and mineral flavors.

Sweet corn, spices, and stones can be discerned in the aromatics of the tangy, broad 2002 Spatlese. It is light to medium-bodied, soft, and filled with red currants and melon balls. Some tropical fruit notes can be found in its extensive finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2025.
