Not the most exciting zin I've ever had -- and I've had a lot of them, out here near both Napa & Sonoma -- but very pleasant, nice and flavorful without having a huge body. For the price, I'll probably stick to Bellas (a bit more for the same, IIRC), but a really nice bottle to know about.
Captain's Reserve wines are produced in extremely limited quantities each year, exclusively for wine club members and guests of the Estate. They are named in honor of Captain Gustave Niebaum, the visionary who, in the 1880s, founded Inglenook and brought Napa Valley worldwide recognition. Made from grapes grown in the finest Napa Valley vineyards-including Rubicon Estate-these wines are created to illustrate the intensity and depth of flavors that have made this region famous.<br/><br/>Because most of our Estate wines are designed to mature and develop complexity with cellaring, it was our goal with the Captain's Reserve to craft wines that would not need aging and be immediately accessible upon release. Zinfandel has a long history in California and there are many vineyards that have vines, which are quite old. Because we've been producing Zinfandel for nearly twenty-years, we've learned a lot about blending the wines of various clones and using a mix of different barrels in order to craft a more complex wine. For our Captain's Reserve Zinfandel, we blend the fruit from our own estate vineyards with fruit from one of our Napa Valley neighbors.<br/><br/>The 2005 vintage gave way to a late harvest as a result of cool summer temperatures and high crop yields, which required more "hang time" to achieve optimal ripeness. Because of the large crop, many of the vineyards were thinned several times throughout the season to reduce the amount of fruit, which in turn created more concentrated flavors in the remaining clusters. The autumn weather was ideal, with October experiencing beautiful warm and sunny conditions.<br/><br/>Combined, these factors resulted in perfectly ripened grapes, which immediately displayed the physiological integrity needed to create a well-balanced, intensely flavorful wine with a rich, enduring finish. Immediately after harvesting, the fruit is cold-soaked to extract color and preserve the aromatics. Our Zinfandel is fermented at warm temperatures and punched down daily before being placed into a variety of French and American oak barrels for maturation.<br/><br/>Our 2005 Captain's Reserve Zinfandel offers fresh, succulent fruit flavors and sweet, supple tannins.
