What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

Cape Mentelle, sister to Cloudy Bay, is one of the founding wineries of Margaret River. Soon after launch, the winery twice won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, Australia’s most prestigious wine award. Margaret River has limestone soils reminiscent of Bordeaux, and a climate tempered by ocean currents, resulting in expressive and well-structured wines.

Editorial Reviews

Wonderfully fragrant on the nose with notes of pepper, earth, leather and spice all complimented by a flush of floral tones over a base of ripe plum and black raspberry fruits. there's a lurking touch of gaminess that emerges with air and adds a hint of a wild edge to the flavors in the mouth. The wine starts off quite full in the mouth with black raspberry and dark cherry fruits but gains definition and freshness as it opens up. the tannins are very finely grained and the acidity keeps this lively and adds length to the long, dark, cigar butt and earth tinged fruits on the finish. Compelling Shiraz. 93pts

Dark color with some browning on the edges. Not alarming type of browning though. The nose had some great fresh vibrant dark fruits: cassis, blackberry, and boysenberry. There is a slight band-aid element that I won't quite call VA. It's actually quite intriguing and I am going to call it a fruit note. The mouth explodes with dark black plums, blackberries, and camphor. There is an element of purity that belies its price. A pure fruit forward and elegant wine. I love the notes of tobacco, dark coffee and tar. The tannins are spot on and the acid level is hovering over perfection. This is read more...

Cape Mentelle is an excellent, earthy wine from the Margaret River area of Western Australia. A wonderful place to visit with many exceptional wines. Cape Mentelle stands out among some excellent local competition. The nose and full body of this wine will surprise your friends and have them convinced you paid a lot more than what you did. Enjoy.

Cape Mentelle is one of the leading wine producers of Margaret River, in the south of Western Australia. This vintage of Shiraz is superb: rich, full-throttle, full of spice and dark fruit.

Densely packed with violets and plum fruit laced with peppery spice. On the palate, a supple and harmonious structure, with complex flavors ranging from sweet fruit to savory spice.
