Cape Mentelle, sister to Cloudy Bay, is one of the founding wineries of Margaret River. Soon after launch, the winery twice won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, Australia’s most prestigious wine award. Margaret River has limestone soils reminiscent of Bordeaux, and a climate tempered by ocean currents, resulting in expressive and well-structured wines.

Another great Margaret River Chardonnay. You can safely buy any Cape Mentelle Chardonnay (they won't release a bad one) and have just knocked off a case or so of the 2005, we were looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. Melon with peaches and grapefruit and a cedary, nutty oak that is perfect with a finish you almost don't wait to enjoy, wanting more. And one of the rare times that Halliday, Oliver and Mattinson all agree - 95 points all around.

Has exceptional structure and mouth-feel; the citrus and nectarine fruit is vibrant, and there is a streak of minerality running through the wine; oak is present, but not at all intrusive James Halliday. Lighter in body and seemingly shorter this smells and tastes of melon, peaches and butterscotch. A pleasing seam of acidity is there to offset the creamy softness and there is a customary trace of spiced and sweet vanilla oak.
Supple polished and refined wrapping its ebullient pineapple pear and citrus flavors in a silky package finish lingering beautifully.
