Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2013

External Review by We Speak Wine:

COLOUR: ruby red, tending to garnet red with ageing. BOUQUET: penetrating, very full and varied, reminiscent of wild berries. FLAVOUR: dry, warm, full-bodied, harmonious, delicate and austere at the same time, persistent.

Tenuta Caparzo:
The “Caparzo” name seems to originate from Ca' Pazzo, as seen in several ancient maps. The vineyards, cellars and all wine-making equipment were developed towards the end of the 1960s, with progressive adaptation and constant up-dating of both the land and the cellars. Innovative cultivation systems and, in particular, several clones are still experimented today on the estates - extending over an area of 190

Rich blackberry fruit and a little sweet vanilla bean are notable on the nose, with some mineral notes as well. The palate has fresh blackberry, flinty Earth, and a dusty finish. Well balanced with a nice freshness. 90 Pts

Purple juju fruits and a hint of herbaceousness lead into a very easy and soft palate that is smooth with blue and black berries. Fresh and even a bit bright.

Candied dark berry flavors and a little smokey and herbal. The finish was a bit vinegary for me.

Initial “heavy,” “stinky” nose blows off after a few minutes. A “fresh” one replaces it showing some strawberry, mint, maybe, some citrus. No big blast of fruit on entry, but there is noticeable red berry hints. Very nice, not overwhelming acid. Some hints of earthiness. Fairly stiff tannin sneaks in on the back of the palate. Good wine and one that will match well with just about any hearty meal.

Solid notes of grilled meat over firm black cherry. Brooding and muscular. More lean black cherry on the palate with some smoke and leather. Grippy, fine-grained tannins and a bit disjointed at this stage, but with balanced components. Finishes with nice length and lingering notes of sweet leather and sandalwood.

Lovely fragrances of pressed powder, black berries, rose and tilled soil waft from the glass. The firm palate offers wild cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, licorice and savory herb alongside tightly knit but refined tannins. Fresh acidity balances this out but it’s still young and not fully developed. Drink 2020–2030.

Caparzo’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a lush and voluptuous wine with soft cherry aromas at the front of spice, dark chocolate and toasted almond. The wine is more approachable in style with a drinking window that can offer pleasure to those too impatient to wait. The tannins are also more evolved and integrated for a more gentle approach. The finish is marked by an evident touch of vanilla from the oak.

Caparzo’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is impressive. It boasts serious depth, nuance and complexity. Smoke, licorice, spices, black cherries and plums all develop in the glass, supported by firm, beautifully integrated tannins. This is a solid Brunello with plenty of upside for the next decade, if not longer. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2028.

Fresh cherry and raspberry flavors highlight this juicy red, with accents of underbrush and tobacco lending nuance, followed by a spicy finish. The dense tannins suggest this is built for the long haul. Best from 2016 through 2030.

There’s a delicacy to this version, showing a latent structure and a distinctive spiciness surrounding the core flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice and mineral. Harmonious and persistent, featuring a long finish. A compelling Brunello riserva. Best from 2015 through 2032.

Voted among the best Brunellos by a group of winemaking peers, Caparzo’s riserva is beautifully balanced and layered with chocolate, cherry, leather, blackberry and lingering spice notes. The wine shows freshness and elegance on the finish thanks to the silky nature of the mouthfeel.
