The nose showed black cherry, plums, sweet and spices with savory notes of brown sauce and mountain herbs. On the palate, it was at first lean with mixed berries and herbs, but filled out with time as the fruit turned darker yet focused with incredible depth, balance and with a fine tannic structure. It’s remarkably more open than expected at this young stage, yet its balance and structure promised a long life ahead.

Extremely bold and dark with exceedingly Brunello-like extravagance and opulence. Inky darkness and loads of aromatic momentum in the form of blackberry, cherry liqueur, spice, leather, tobacco, rum cake, dark cinnamon, vanilla bean and bitter chocolate. Impressive complexity. Soft, ripe and generous on the close, but not overdone or overripe. Well-contained and balanced. Cellar Selection. Located north of Montalcino in Montosoli, Capanna was bought by the Cencioni family in 1957. A small estate dedicated to farming and vinifying Sangiovese Grosso, the Cencionis own some of the best crus of Brunello, The vineyards are planted above a north-facing slope to volcanic soils which encourages, slow and even ripening. No chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used, and every effort is made to maintain natural biodiversity in the vineyard. and the winemaking at Capanna is modern, emphasizing the fruit-forward components of the Sangiovese Grosso grape while allowing full expression of the...

Aromas of ripe raspberries and blueberries follow through to a full body, with a solid core of fruit and bright acidity. Dried lemon rind as well. This is a wine that needs a few years to open and show you what it truly has. Always serious. James Suckling. Capanna’s offering in 2007 is extremely bold, dark and opulent. Loads of aromatic momentum in the form of blackberry, cherry liqueur, spice, leather, tobacco, rum cake, cinnamon, vanilla bean and bitter chocolate characterize the bouquet. The wine also shows a soft, ripe, generous texture, yet remains well-contained and balanced.

Nearly opaque ruby core, fading to brick at the rim. The nose is traditional Brunello, with sour cherry scents paired with more pronounced aromas of earth and sweet spice. As with the nose, the palate displays traditional Brunello character. Light bl... Chuck Hayward. A Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany in Italy. 2007 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 1500ml

Good, full bright red. Very ripe but lively aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol lifted by flowers and mint. A juicy, tight midweight with good medicinal reserve to its solid flavors of black and red cherry. Powerful (15% alcohol, according to the label) but not hot or tough. This firmly structured, classically styled Brunello finishes with substantial building, dusty tannins and very good lift. Built to age.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous in this vintage. Sweet red berries, flowers, mint, hard candy and licorice are some of the many notes that flow from this radiant, hugely expressive wine. The 2007 stands apart for its sensual, feminine personality and fabulous overall balance. High-toned floral notes waft from the glass on the sensual finish. There is just a touch of sweetness from the ripeness of the fruit. The 2007 was vinified in conical oak vats and aged in Slavonian oak casks for 40 months, a very traditional approach that works nicely here. 93+ pointsAntonio Galloni from Wine Advocate
