Cantina Zaccagnini Riserva Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Jammy black berry fruits and a little forest floor greet the nose followed by hints of peppery beef jerky and dried cranberries. Polished in the mouth, this lacks a bit of oomph when it comes to the nice if subtle array of wild berry and slightly balsamic flavors. The acid is well covered and the tannins sufficiently sweet and supporting the moderately long slightly jammy black fruits fruit on the finish. Well behaved but not terribly distinct. 86pts

When the market for those grapes died out, he decided to produce wine himself, with his cousin Concezio as the winemaker, eventually building a successful family business. The value-driven wines are produced with a signature grapevine twig wrap, which has been a key point in its successful brand recognition among consumers. The wines are produced as still reds, whites and that regional Abruzzo rosé specialty, Cerasuolo.  Read less

I remember when this wine was unknown and less than $8 in NYC. It has gone up in price because it is amazing. Try it!

A great deep, dark red wine that goes well with any red meat dishes. We really like it with lamb. This wine is the montepulciano abruzzo grape not to be confused with the Montepulciano region of Italy. Meant to be drunk now, it's tannins are easy and it's flavor of dark fruit and leather make it fun to drink.

Intense ruby red color with violet nuances; intense, characteristic bouquet of the primary grape aromas; fruity component, full-bodied and robust, well-balanced with tannin and oak features. 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Intense violet robe. Aromas of plums and ripe blackberry. Each sip delivers a mouthful of ripe berries, leather and black pepper with subtle hints of oregano, dried herbs, and a touch of vanilla; all leading to a dry, supple finish.

Dal Tralcetto shows the softness of Montepulciano, with aromas of sweet cherry, prune, tobacco, cinnamon and toasted nut. A tiny grape cutting is affixed to the neck of the bottle as a throwback to old farming traditions.

Bright ruby red colour with garnet hues. Intense, characteristic bouquet that fully reflects the primary aromatic components of this variety. On the palate, it shows clear breed: it is full-bodied and robust, with a perfect integration of tannins and wood.

Elegant and lightly gamy, with plum, fig and spice cake notes. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins framing the mocha-scented finish. Drink now.
