Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Ovello 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit woody and mineral on the nose with spicy almost white pepper and limestone notes that are followed by a hint of dusty yet sweet rose petals. This opens nicely with thrust and depth on the palate offering up sandy, intense and softly sweet raspberry preserve flavors on entry with a faint bitter orange edge upfront, followed by some stepped tea character and a touch of licorice on the backend before this fades into a fairly tight though well fruited, finish which shows lots of rose hips and amarena cherry flavors. Fairly broad in the mouth with a nice base of ripe, supple tannins. 92pts

Cantina del Pino:
"This land has been in my family for generations and these vineyards are some of the best in Barbaresco. From the time I was a young boy I worked year round in these vineyards and I understand that without superior grapes you can't make superior wine. I know how lucky I am. " Renato Vacca - winemaker/owner Cantina del Pino

Cantina del Pino produces great regional wines, and this is their best. The Barbaresco Ovello 2000 is way better than WS's 87 rating.

Der am gleichnamigen Hügel in der Lage Loreto aus sandigen Kalkböden wächst, besticht durch seine mineralische und gradlinig-frische Art mit viel Eleganz ohne die Handschrift von Renato Vacca zu vermissen.

Good medium red. At once deeper and higher-pitched on the nose than the 2006 normale, offering aromas of raspberry, spices and fresh herbs. Sweeter on the palate and more delineated than the classico, with the fresh herb element giving lift to the red fruit flavors. Finishes with broad, fine-grained tannins and good length.

Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, flowers, smoke, gunflint and iron, with nutty and gamey nuances. Sweet, supple and expressive, with moderate depth and nuance and a slight rusticity. The nutty note carries through on the palate. Should provide early drinkability.

Medium- to full-bodied, with raspberry and strawberry jam aromas, soft tannins and a fruity, earthy, chocolaty aftertaste. Soft and pleasing now, but will improve with age. Best after 2006.

The 2005 Barbaresco Ovello is another magnificent Barbaresco from Renato Vacca. The Ovello is decidedly more powerful and taut in its expression of red cherries, flowers, minerals, and menthol although it is just as compelling as the Albesani. The wine offers exceptional length and a long, powerful finish. The wine continues to improve in the glass, but it remains a decidedly energetic, youthful Barbaresco in need of significant cellaring. In a word: majestic. Ovello sees greater temperature fluctuations from day to night than Albesani. The microclimate, along with the poorer, white soils give the Ovello its signature focus and drive. Anticipated maturity: 2015andndash;2025.
