Canoe Ridge Merlot the Expedition 2015

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Heat and red cherry aromas are sort of a one-track idea but strong and direct. On the palate there's more going on, with loads of fruit flavors and cola. Strident red fruit flavors are powerful and precede a candied finish. If you are looking for an example of a dry wine that carries itself like a sweet one, look no further.

We produce wines with intense flavors by growing our grapes in a unique location with distinctive soils and microclimate. In 1989, a group of farmers started planting winegrapes on Canoe Ridge, which up to that time had been home to only badgers and sagebrush. Canoe Ridge Vineyard's original 101 acres of plantings were completed and additional acres were developed. A total of 143 acres are now in full production. Our estate vineyard overlooks the vast Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 29,370 acres of marshes, sloughs, open water and cropland. This is a popular nesting area for Great Basin Canadian geese, several species of ducks and other marsh and water birds. Read less

Sweet herbs, dried flowers, candied blackberries, vanilla and cardamom greet the nose. This is pretty fruity on entry and gives the impression of being noticeably sweet. That impression of sweetness lends this lots of weight in the mouth. There are nice flavors of berries, herbs and oak but they are somewhat obscured by the sweet nature of the flavors. Acids are integrated well and the tannins soft and supportive but this lacks a bit of definition on the palate and finishes on the short side with the acids doing a fine job of cleansing the palate. Not my kind of wine. 80pts

Purple in the glass witn some light penetrating. Initial annoying olivy nose, but that dissapates to a more herbal aroma. Fairly light on the palate with lots of raspberry fruit. Light tannins and sufficient acid to give it some backbone. Something of a peppermint finish. US$12.59 at Total WIne.
