It is a blend of 40% Mazuelo, 40% Syrah and 20% Garnacha (Grenache). It is a full bodied wine with a luxiorious dark ruby color that gives you a strong nose of plum and blackberry. There is a great depth to the flavor with the plum and blackberry up front and a hint of spice and a nice mineral finish. When it's all said and done, there is just a touch of blackberry that lingers teasingly. This wine is ready to drink now but a little time out of the bottle won't hurt it.
A Spanish classic; inky GSM (Grenach Syrah Mazuelo) blend you can chew on. I hesitate to say the 2007 is drinking really well now (Spring 2009), give it a year to mellow out and it will be as delightful as the 06.
Very California style - big, bold, fruity, high alcohol. Nice, rich color.
Intense and complex, with a big cherry aroma. I love Spanish wines, and this one was no disappointment.
I had the 2007 - it was excellent. very good with lamb stew. It was really good 2nd glass in- the flavor came around. Heavy base, fruity on top. It held over to day 2 as well (though not as complex).
Amazing flavor, complex taste. Great with food or stand alone. Very bold, heavy fruit flavors. Perfect for grilled meats
Tasted with extraordinary tapas at 'Lolita' in Barcelona, this voluptuous, dense, rich blend was fabulous with the food. Best evening of the week at GSM MWC, short walk from Espanya/convention center. Worth a trip. Yes, I'm conflating food w the wine, but the wine absolutely was excellent.
External Reviews for Can Blau Celler Can Blau
The Montsant region, located on the periphery of the Priorat D.O., is considered by many to be baby Priorat. Can Blau is a traditional blend of Cariñena, Syrah, and Garnacha. Grown on slate hillsides, this wine is characterized by plush black fruit and underlying minerality.
Big and dark, and it comes with no shortage of prune, blackberry, smoky oak and depth. A lusty flavor profile filled with blackberry, cola, clove and chocolate is stout and satisfying, while the dark finish sports licorice and bitter cacao. Forthright and chunky wine. Drink now into 2011.
Crisp acidity and toasty oak frame bright cherry, cocoa, leaf and mint flavors in this brisk, medium-bodied red. A bit raw, but lively and focused. Mazuelo, Syrah and Garnacha. Drink now through 2011.
The 2007 Can Blau is purple-colored with a nose of cedar, mineral, baking spices, blueberry, and black cherry. This leads to a full-bodied wine with layers of flavor, enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years, and a pure, fruit-filled finish. It will be at its peak from 2010 to 2018.
Smoky and herbal aromas wreathe cherry and light earthy flavors in this restrained red, which has good grip, opening to plum and licorice and on the finish. Drink now through 2012.
A fabulous value from the other side of the famed Priorat appellation (the frugal person's Priorat?), this dense ruby/purple-colored 2004 exhibits wonderful minerality along with beautiful raspberry and blueberry fruit notes interwoven with liquid slate/rock-like characteristics. Medium-bodied with gorgeously pure fruit, this blend of Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache is ideal for drinking now and over the next 5-6 years. There is even more good news as 6,500 cases are exported to the USA.
Dark purple. Sexy aromas of blackberry, blueberry, Asian spices and smoked meat. Supple and open-knit, with sweet dark berry preserve flavors, velvety texture and good mineral bite. Manages to be both nervy and concentrated, with very good finishing clarity and cut. Leaves strong blue fruit notes behind and repeats the spicy quality.
The D.O. Montsant, where Can Blau is located is horse shoe shaped appellation that surrounds the D.O. Priorat on three sides. It should have been included on the Priorat appellation but was excluded when it was designated. The winery selected the village of Mas Roig as the base of operations and purchased 60 acres of vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The varietal, Cariñena, was planted on sandy clay soil; Syrah on chalky soils and the Garnacha on slate, llicorella. The soils are similar in both areas with Montsant being a bit more complex with a mixture of slate (llicorella) clay and granite.
