Campoleone Lamborghini 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Campoleone is the best I have tasted thus far. This blended Umbrian red (50-50 Sangiovese and Merlot) opens with an inky black color and extreme elegance that hits at the very core. Shapely fruit tones of blackberry and dried cherry are enhanced by balsam herb, licorice, sweet spice, tobacco, forest floor and flower potpourri. The close is soft, long lasting and ripe. I look forward to revisiting this wine in six or seven years when it has completed its evolution. Drink: 2015-2024...94"WA 8/2013

Lamborghini is the wine brand founded by Italian sports car manufacturer Ferruccio Lamborghini. The estate, situated in Panicale, lies near Trasimeno lake on the Umbria-Tuscan border. Born into a family of wine grape-growers, Lamborghini purchased the estate to get back to his roots upon his retirement in 1971. The property boasts a total 100 hectares, divided between a 9-hole golf course, agriturismo and the 32 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Besides the traditional plantings of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo, he also planted Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, a bold move at the time. His daughter Patrizia Lamborghini took over the business in the 1990s, taking up most of the white rootstock in favor of the Sangiovese and Merlot. The red blend wines are produced adhering to very high standards of quality production.  Read less

The wine is brilliant and can be found for very decent prices. Amazing blend of some of the best grapes in Italy. Sophisticated as the car itself.

Winemaker's notes: Campoleone is a red IGT from Umbria and the estate's signature wine. It is 50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot. This Merlot/Sangiovese blend has an extraordinary perfume of saddle leather smoke cassis prunes and plums. A rich full-bodied voluptuously-textured wine with layers of concentrated fruit and sweet tannins. A magnificent seamlessness with a huge explosive long finish. It is a wine of great stature as well as intensity. 92 Points The Wine Advocate: `It is a firmly structured wine with superb density on the palate where layers of tobacco dark cherries earthiness smoke licorice and toasted oak all come to life. The tannins finish slightly dry and astringent likely a result of an overly exuberant use of French oak. Still this is a beautifully delineated focused Campoleone. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.`
