Inky dark concentration and bright cherry fruit open the nose of this nicely balanced Brunello. Leather, tobacco and cola notes give it aromatic momentum, and the wine shows bright acidity capped by firm tannins. Pair it with lamb or pork. - M.L. - Wine Enthusiast Magazine 91 PointsKirsch and wild herb aromas presage cherry and berry flavors in this firm, linear style. Full ruby-red. Aromas of spicy dark red cherry, blueberry, licorice and tobacco. Juicy and tightly wound but essentially pliant, with smooth red fruit and licorice flavors complicated by leather and coffee. Classically dry Brunello, and a very clear example of a blend of the Brunellos made in two different areas: the sangiovese from S. Angelo in Colle is more minerally and refined, while from S. Angelo Scalo it’s much fleshier and sweeter. Finishes with supple but firm tannins.

The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is strikingly beautiful in this vintage. Sweet floral notes meld into raspberries, flowers, mint and spices. A sexy, radiant wine, the 2008 impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The long, polished finish is impeccable. All the elements are in the right place. I don’t expect the 2008 to be a long-term ager, but it is very appealing today. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2020.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni is a huge wine bursting with dark red cherries, plums, licorice, new leather and spices. This is an especially big, voluminous style built on extroverted fruit and sheer richness, but it all works. The weight of the vintage comes through in the wine-s glycerin.
