Campo Viejo Tempranillo Blend Rioja Crianza 2004
“Dividing our vineyards into plots gives me the chance to select the grape assigned to this Reserva depending on the potential that it shows over successive stages. The result is a round, well-balanced and tasty wine.” -Elena Adell, Campo Viejo Winemaker Winemaking and Ageing Working from the selected vineyards and after careful elaboration at a controlled temperature this wine stands for 18 months in oak barrels and 18 months in the bottle to complete the ageing. Tasting: Intense maroon ruby red with woven egdes. It combines the aroma of mature fruit with vanilla. Round and tasty wine. Food and wine matching: All types of meat, game and wild mushrooms. Serving temperature: 17º - 18º
Ruby red wine with strong tannins and a long finish. A little tart, so it makes me wonder if it could improve with a few more years in the cellar. I have had better 5 dollar wines, but I think this one does have potential.
An earthy, herbal, lightly tannic nose, leading to a dry, leathery yet fruity wine. Its pretty predictable, but alright. Mainly the dry tannins and cedar come through, but there are some plums and licorice notes too.
A lovely wine with a blend of strawberry and rasberry fruits with a hint of spices. Really lovely with a pasta dish or on it's own. cheap and cheerful.
An easy drinking smooth wine that is great with a bbq. You've had better wines but you've definitely had worse. Will improve in a couple of years.
Mellow and slightly medicinal. Delicate finish, bit no zing.
Very plain and light, rather cheap for a crianza. A little tart too with an ok finish. (Tasted as part of a marathon at the Wines from Spain trade event.)
Blend of tempranillo, graciano and mazuelo grapes aged in oak barrels for two years. Aged another 18 months in the bottle to mellow out the tannins. Deep maroon color. The aroma combines mature red fruit (especially cherry) with hint of vanilla. The palate is dominated by cherry with vanilla and pepper accents. There is an earthy quality throughout the tasting. A well-rounded wine with a smooth yet robust finish.

Food Pairings for Campo Viejo Tempranillo Blend Rioja Crianza
Ruby red with a gold-tinged rim. Deep, vibrant colour. Complex nose. It retains extraordinarily well the ripe red-berry fruit aromas of blackberries, blueberries, and black plums. Gradually it opens up to reveal smoky, toasted wood nuances, with spices and hints of minerals and tobacco. This is another typical aspect of this wine which has evolved during its time in the barrel and the bottle. Smooth mouth-feel, with sweet, polished tannins. A long, elegant, perfumed finish with final hints of coffee with chocolate.
