Entry level wine. OK for an introduction to rioja but not something I would search for.

Juicy rioja. Medium to light body red with a predominant tempranillo/grenache blend (muceunda \/ or similar makes up the rest). Ripe cherry and plum with hints of vanilla. Decent everyday red. $15 cdn.

This is the first ever 100 percent Garnacha bottling from Rioja house, Campo Viejo. Garnacha or Grenache as it’s known in France’s Rhone Valley is actually one of the designated grapes allowed for production of Rioja red. Grapes for this wine come from Campo Viejo's vineyards in the lower Rioja Baja subregion and Garnacha thrives in these warm, dry conditions. Vines are planted in alluvial soils with clay, limestone and silt. Following harvest, the wine was fermented in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature, with a 12-day maceration. The wine then aged four months in new French oak barrels. It shows aromas of red berries, cherry, vanilla and spice. On the palate bright strawberry fruit, raspberry, cherry, dried herbal notes and hints of toast play out with supple tannins.

Deep ruby red colour. The nose presents jam, dried flowers, tobacco and chocolate; these fragrances come back in the flavour which is elegant and smooth.

Opened in 2001, the new Campo Viejo winery was designed to be a harmonious balance between winemaking, architecture and sustainability. These elements have come together to create a temple of winemaking that remains at the cutting edge of the international winemaking industry today. It is situated right in the heart of La Rioja, the most prestigious growing region in Spain and the native home of the Tempranillo grape. For this wine they sourced Tempranillo from the three sub-regions of Rioja; Alta, Baja ans Alavesa. Whole grape clusters are 100% gravity fed, without undergoing any type of pressure, which could adversely affect the quality of the wine. This gentle, painstaking winemaking process makes it possible to obtain smooth, harmonious wines, with lots of concentrated fruit aromas and flavors. 100% Tempranillo, this wine is aged 4 months in American oak barrels. A Platinum Award winner in the 2015 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition with a 94 point score. They said "Hooray for big scores at small prices! Spain seems to be the leader when it comes to over-delivering value in reds, and this Rioja is an absolute steal. Peppery spicy cherry fruit carries the day, with a touch of dill and leaf adding interest. Somm alert -- here is the wine you've been looking for at the top end of your red menu."

It is an intense ruby red with aromas of black fruit and vanilla. Velvety and elegant. Food and wine matching: Drink it with red or white meat, roasts and cheese. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo grapes. Campo Viejo's Website
