What to Expect

The Rioja region of Spain produces one of the world's finest, and most long lived wines: Rioja. Rioja's renaissance, in the latter half of the 19th century, was a direct result of the phyloxera bug that decimated vineyards around the globe. While English merchants came to Rioja to replace their French imports, the wines here actually have much more in common with Chianti. Both wines are blend relying heavily on one grape, in this case Tempranillo. Like Chianti's Sangiovese, Tempranillo usually produces a relatively high acid wine of medium to medium-full body. Tempranillo tends to produce wines with a dusty, leathery edge to its raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. With additions of Graciano, Mazuela and Grancha, the wines of Rioja can take on additional layers of flavor and aroma, but the tradition of extended oak aging for Rioja's great wines contributes to an even more obvious imprint. While the Spaniards have traditionally been fans of the strong vanilla and coconut components that American oak barrels have contributed to Rioja, more and more producers have turned to French oak favoring its more subtle spice tones. Rioja continues to undergo extended aging in barrel with Reserva and Gran Reserva bottlings, representing a producer's highest achievement, spending a minimum of 3 of 5 years respectively in the producer's cellar.

Winemakers Notes

“Dividing our vineyards into plots gives me the chance to select the grape assigned to this Reserva depending on the potential that it shows over successive stages. The result is a round, well-balanced and tasty wine.”
-Elena Adell, Campo Viejo Winemaker

Winemaking and Ageing

Working from the selected vineyards and after careful elaboration at a controlled temperature this wine stands for 18 months in oak barrels and 18 months in the bottle to complete the ageing.

Tasting: Intense maroon ruby red with woven egdes. It combines the aroma of mature read more...

Ruby red wine with strong tannins and a long finish. A little tart, so it makes me wonder if it could improve with a few more years in the cellar. I have had better 5 dollar wines, but I think this one does have potential.

An earthy, herbal, lightly tannic nose, leading to a dry, leathery yet fruity wine. Its pretty predictable, but alright. Mainly the dry tannins and cedar come through, but there are some plums and licorice notes too.

Ruby red with a golden hue at the rim, bright and deep. Complex nose. On the fruit side, it reveals the sum of the sensations contributed by the grape varieties used in its blend: cherry, black plum, ripe, juicy blackberries. The time spent in the cask brings cloves, pepper, vanilla, coconut, enriched by the aromas which evolve during the time in the bottle. Smooth, balanced mouth-feel, elegant and full, with a long, lingering finish.

An easy drinking smooth wine that is great with a bbq. You've had better wines but you've definitely had worse. Will improve in a couple of years.

Deep ruby red color with amazing clarity. Distinct aromas of raspberries and strawberries with a subtle hint of vanilla. Light on the palate with robust tannins and bright flavors of anise, cedar, and pomegranate. Ended with a surprisingly long, pleasant finish.

Very earthy wine with nose of red plum and other red fruits with just right amount of oak. Too bad the palate doesn't quite follow the expectation from the nose,,,
