Cameron Hughes Grenache Blend Campo de Borja Lot 98 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Notes: Incredible and immediately identifiable nose – this wine is from Spain. The color is intense, vibrant purple, the nose spicy with dark, plummy notes and dusty black pepper. On the palate this wine is rich with blackberry compote, racy cherry fruit, and noticeable black pepper. There is a solid block of tannins backing up this wine but they are well integrated with the long, spicy finish. It doesn’t take a lot, but a little air loosens this wine up and it will continue to improve in the bottle. Cameron Confidential: This is another awesome value wine sourced by winemaker John. It comes to us from a co-op in Spain with some very talented, young, and forward looking winemakers who have been working with John for many years to take their facilities and awesome old vines to the next level. When Doug and I first smelled this wine we were both taken aback by the explosive nose and pretty fruit. We hope to do a lot more work with this co-op down the road; in fact, we just bough a couple of small lot (150-200 cases), 80-100 year old vine garnacha’s that we hope to have next Spring. In the meantime, acquaint yourself with this awesome GSM as its one of the best deals coming out of Spain. Also, for those of you who don’t know, the GSM blend has been popularized primarily by the Aussies though it does have roots in the Rhone where Grenache and syrah are widely planted. The varietals work very well together much like the Bordeaux varietals of cabernet, merlot, cab franc, malbec and petite verdot do in Bordeaux or Meritage blends here in the US.

This offers a rich aromatic array of chocolate licorice and raspberry liquor with a sweet over-arching vanilla/powdered sugar character with tinges of earth and buttery oak. In the mouth this is very fruity with a sweet core of mulberry jam with a thick, velvety mouthfeel. Soft tannins and acid make this classic fruit bomb a spicy, grapey easy drinking bottle. 84pts

For $7 bucks you can beat it for flavor. Campo de Borja, Spain, small AVA with only about 17 vineyards. $7 bucks is a great way to educate your palate with international wines. This grenache, Lot 98, is found at Costco. This is an easy drinking wine. Love licorce nose and spicey finish. Goes with grilled turkey, chicken or pork

Incredible and immediately identifiable nose-this wine is from Spain! The color is intense, vibrant purple. The nose is spicy with dark, plummy notes and dusty black pepper. On the palate, this wine is rich with blackberry compote, racy cherry fruit, and noticeable black pepper. A solid block of tannins backs up this wine, but they are well integrated with the long, spicy finish. It doesn't take a lot, but a little air loosens this wine up. No doubt, it will continue to improve in the bottle.
