Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon Monterey Santa Barbara Lot 138 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Notes: Dark cherry red with a crimson rim. Aromas of warm blueberry cobbler, cinnamon and clove on the nose, this wine has a fine balance of copious ripe fruit with light mineral influences and herbal spices, a trademark of the region. The acidity is in tune with the fruit and the tannic structure is soft, yet silky, with fine integration. Juicy red and blackcurrant favors show impressive fruit sweetness with admirable restraint. Showing superior approachability now, this wine has fantastic mouth feel and will drink beautifully for the next 4 to 6 years. Cameron Confidential: So imagine beautiful Napa structure, with fun central coast fruit and spice. Made from estate fruit grown in the highlands around Santa Barbara at elevations well over 2800 feet, these grapes sit in a similar heat index to Napa Valley. From a $30 Reserve bottle program, this wine comes to us from the makers of Lots 117 and 118. Back during my times as a cellar rat at Corbett Canyon, this producer had one of my favorite tasting rooms and wine school. So if you’re looking for a good ‘go-to’ Cab, this is your wine. At 12 bucks, it’s an awesome deal.

Tobacco, earth, fruit, spice, nice edge of roasted poblano, vanilla, and blueberry all contribute to a complex aromatic impression. Really slinky entry, clean wine, nice backing tannins, good acid, red fruited on the palate with a warm crystallized spice tone, tannins build and give the wine a bit of a fuzzy feel, nice persistence to the red currant fruit, the finish is moderate long with a nice, dark, earthy fruit finale. Needs some time to soften up a bit give it 6 months in the cellar or decant for an hour or two. 88pts
