Cambria Katherine's Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Dried hay and vanilla on the nose with lighter baked apple and french vanilla ice cream. More fruit on the palate than in the nose, with a fair heft from the vanilla, perhaps almost overly so as it feels like it doesn't fit well in the wine, however fans of oakiness might well give it a try. Still, the fruit on the attack is warm peach, apple and lemon and is quite pleasant.

Tight and sandy on the nose with hints of hay, vanilla and toasty oak covering a core of sour apple and pithy citrus fruit with a sweet gingery edge. Moderately big and soft in the mouth, though showing good clarity to the fruit which is zesty and bright. Lime tinged flavors of crisp apple and pineapple flow across the palate with a nice veneer of wood spice following. This gains some caramel tones on the backend before fading away on the slightly spicy and dry finish that shows apple peel fruit flavors. Big yet simple if fresh and easy to drink. 86pts

We visited this winery earlier this year. We enjoyed the Chardonnay.

We are not usually into Chardonnay because they are usually too woody and lacking in fruit but our friends had us sample this one & we really liked it. :-) Shouldn't we get our Route 66 Trophie now?

This cool-climate wine needs a warm vintage to show its best, and it certainly got heat in 2004. The result is a big, opulent wine with masses of tropical fruit flavors slathered in spicy oak. Yet it retains crisp, citrusy acidity, and has an elegant streak of minerality.

Cambria Katherine's Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown on the estate in northern Santa Barbara county. Close proximity to the Pacific Ocean gives the vineyards a long growing season. This wine reveals pineapple fruit and the finest balance of butter and oak I have yet found in a California Chardonnay. The buttery finish is very pleasantly prolonged. To achieve the full taste, do not drink this wine too cold. Please take it from the fridge and let it warm a little at room temperature. Enjoy as it passes your lips, and you will repeat with me when I say: "Kiss me Kate!"

A tight band of ripe pear, citrus and pineapple leads to a spicy, cedary oak aftertaste. The fruit doesn't quite fill in all the gaps, but it's still pretty tasty. Drink now.

From the Catherine's Vineyard, this Chardonnay has a beautiful creamy texture and a smooth vanilla flavor with balanced oak and hints of pear. If you've been shying away from Chardonnay or looking for a new favorite, don't hesitate to try this one.

This is a big, fat, unctuous Chardonnay marked by exceptional ripeness and smoky oak. Yet it never loses sight of balance. It's powerful in candied or pie-filling pineapple jam, Mandarin orange zest, apricot brûlée and vanilla custard flavors that are completely dry and accented with crisp acidity. This is an amazing price for a wine of this quality. Sommeliers, buy this beauty by the case.

The most interesting of this trio is the 2004 Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard, which reveals a flamboyant nose of orange blossoms, lemon honey, and wet stones. Tropical fruit characteristics also emerge on the palate. Drink this ripe, medium-bodied white over the next 1-2 years.

Bright with citrus, apple, peach, and vanilla aromas. Rich, mouthfilling flavors of grapefruit, citrus blossom, white peach and sweet oak lead to a crisp finish with a lasting impression of spicy oak.
