Slightly balsamic and beefy on the nose with juniper- and vanilla-topped sliced plum fruit. Rather smooth on entry and a little compact in the mouth with milk chocolate-framed red cherry and red plum fruits on the palate. There's a nice accent of wood spice adding some detail here, though it turns into a more assertive cedary overlay on the back end. The tannins pop a bit on the finish cutting it a bit short. This does show a hint of heat. 87pts

Really love the nose - porto-like raisiny oak notes, with toasted marshmallow and hints of mango. The wood doesn't extend into the body where the black fruit takes hold, with soft tannins + acids.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Julia’s Vineyard flows from the glass with layers of sweet candied fruit, raspberries, flowers and spices. The Julia’s is impressive for its expressive varietal character and excellent balance, both quite an achievement for a wine with a 60,000 case production. This was fermented in oak barrels (27% new) and aged on its lees with batonnage for seven months. Anticipated maturity: 2011–2014.

Another lovely Julia’s Pinot from Cambria, at a fair price. With its light tannins and transparency, it’s definitely Pinot Noir, and the acidity testifies to a cool climate. You might even pick out the Santa Maria Valley from the crushed Indian spices. Subtle but intriguing cherry, cola and plum flavors round out the picture. Drink now–2015.

Cambria's Pinot Noir from Julia's Vineyard is a point of reference for all Central Coast Pinot. Year in, year out, this is a fruit forward, excellent value.

It’s been said that great Pinot Noir can only reach its most eloquent expression with a good amount of vine age. We couldn’t agree more: our Julia’s bottling is anchored by one of the oldest commercial planting of Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara county (1974), producing a wine that’s both oral and earthy on the nose and silky on the palate.
