Cambria Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Dried hay and vanilla on the nose with lighter baked apple and french vanilla ice cream. More fruit on the palate than in the nose, with a fair heft from the vanilla, perhaps almost overly so as it feels like it doesn't fit well in the wine, however fans of oakiness might well give it a try. Still, the fruit on the attack is warm peach, apple and lemon and is quite pleasant.

Tight and sandy on the nose with hints of hay, vanilla and toasty oak covering a core of sour apple and pithy citrus fruit with a sweet gingery edge. Moderately big and soft in the mouth, though showing good clarity to the fruit which is zesty and bright. Lime tinged flavors of crisp apple and pineapple flow across the palate with a nice veneer of wood spice following. This gains some caramel tones on the backend before fading away on the slightly spicy and dry finish that shows apple peel fruit flavors. Big yet simple if fresh and easy to drink. 86pts

We visited this winery earlier this year. We enjoyed the Chardonnay.

We are not usually into Chardonnay because they are usually too woody and lacking in fruit but our friends had us sample this one & we really liked it. :-) Shouldn't we get our Route 66 Trophie now?

Another blockbuster from this Santa Barbara County winery. Rich, fruity and complex, with all the bells and whistles you could ask for. Shows why Santa Barbara has emerged as perhaps the leading Chardonnay region in California.

Green-tinged yellow. Poached pear, apple and melon aromas are given depth by smoky lees. Pleasantly bitter flavors of ripe orchard fruits and toasted grain pick up a sweet note with air. A plump, inviting style of chardonnay that finishes with lingering spiciness.

Concentrated and powerful, this is anything but your average California Chardonnay. In fact, it's a bit unorthodox, Burgundian in the sense of its orientation toward terroir expression rather than fruitiness or oak. Yes, the wood shows in scents of walnuts and exotic spice. And the fruit turns up the power with flavors of mandarin orange, accents of primrose and other floral notes. Yet the core of the wine seems to come from a melding of these elements, from a combination that plays as distinctly Santa Maria. There's a fine line of acidity to keep all the fruit toned and lifted, a balance that would carry its flavors with buttery escargots or grilled salmon.

Big, ripe, rich and well oaked. That pretty much says it all about this show-offy wine, with its bold, tropical fruit flavors, crisp coastal acidity and sleek structure. The tart taste of minerally gunmetal adds complexity.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: This one may be a few dollars less pricey than its stablemate below, but we like its more open, fruity style and its mix of Meyer lemon, vanilla and chalky notes. Its flavors are delivered along with a pleasantly supple entry impression...GOOD VALUE.

Bright yellow. Complex aromas of musky pear skin, lees, iodine and oak spice. Deep but lively, offering moderately sweet orchard fruit flavors and a strong lashing of brown spices. A zesty mineral quality lingers on the long, spicy finish.
