A brilliant effort from St.-Emilion's bad boy, Jean-Luc Thunevin, and the Calvet firm, this 2004 was produced from a 25-acre old vine vineyard planted with 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Carignan. After aging in concrete vats, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. It boasts tremendous intensity as well as a big, sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and roasted meats bathed in Provencal herbs. With superb purity, full body, and no hard edges, this savory, mouthfilling red will drink well for 2-3 years.

The 2005 Constance (technically a "Cotes Catalances" Vin de Pays) - consisting of Grenache with 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan - represents the only cuvee among the Calvet-Thunevin line-up not to be aged for 18 months in new barriques, but rather roughly half as long and exclusively in cement. Sweet and alluring aromas of creme de cassis and black raspberry jam lead to a palate of liqueur-like richness along with deep bitter chocolate and coffee as well as wet stone and lead pencil shadings. This excellent value offers an almost unprecedented amount of pure ripe fruit and resonance of finish for its price, and while it is successfully designed for impulsive (possibly even compulsive) consumption, it might well display more nuance with another year or two in bottle.

This young project is the brainchild of Jean-Luc Thunevin and Jean-Roger Calvet and is limited to only a few hectares of old vines planted on black schist (no dirt is present on the surface). Jean-Luc Thunevin made his first mark on the wine world with (what is now) the cult wine Chateau Valandraud in Bordeaux. Valandraud is recognized as one of the first "garage" wines of Bordeaux. In 2001, he teamed up with Jean-Roger Calvet, a local winemaker who was doing great work with Carignan and Grenache, to produce their first vintage. This sub-zone of the Roussillon, located in and around the village of Maury, is some of the most spectacular vineyard land in France. The climate is quite warm and the region is blessed with a Mediterranean influence, helping to produce wines of amazingly dark fruit and concentration. The hillsides are scattered with rosemary, wild thyme, lavender, and garrigue. As the vineyards are extremely steeply terraced, there is no choice but to harvest by hand. Yields are miniscule and volumes are quite low. All of the wines benefit from a 3-4 week maceration in barrel before passing into new French oak. The partners believe (and rightly so), that their old vine material is worthy of a long elevage in wood, and as such, the bottlings age in oak for 18 months before release.
