Calvet Thunevin Cuvee Constance Vdp D Oc Languedoc Roussillon France 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2005 Constance (technically a 'Cotes Catalanes' Vin de Pays) - consisting of Grenache with 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan - represents the only cuvee among the Calvet-Thunevin line-up not to be aged for 18 months in new barriques but rather roughly half as long and exclusively in cement. Sweet and alluring aromas of creme de cassis and black raspberry jam lead to a palate of liqueur-like richness along with deep bitter chocolate and coffee as well as wet stone and lead pencil shadings. This excellent value offers an almost unprecedented amount of pure ripe fruit and resonance of finish for its price and while it is successfully designed for impulsive (possibly even compulsive) consumption it might well display more nuance with another year or two in bottle. 90 points Wine Advocate.

Smooth and sweet fruit fading into a slightly earthy finish. Very very very drinkable. Can't believe how fast the bottle disappeared.

Complex nose of cinnamon, clove, sugar, blackberry, fresh bread or yeast, hint of mineral and earth. Suppose I could roll those up better. In the mouth, sour just-ripe fruit, somewhat intense and acidic but not big. Short to medium finish of fruit and perhaps earth, not sure (tasted almost woody). Interesting wine for the price.

Enjoyed this smooth wine. It opened up after about 30 minutes of decanting. Great fruit forward sipping wine. The bottle went quick.

This is a superb value from Thunevin. It is seductive and approachable now, soft tannins and good red fruits, impossible to have just one glass!

Had a bottle of this (not just a taste) and I just love it. After pop and pour, in reverse order ... the finish has dusty vegetable, "dull matte" licorice/herb, and a scored, used oak taste that's just wonderful, I can't get enough of it. Back into the mid-palate the same vegetal, licorice, and oak wrap around slightly sour just-ripe fruit (I got raspberry, plum, maybe blackberry). Nose is same as my previous take, ie., spicebox, sugar, day-old bread, fruit, earth. Really good QPR. Not sure whether this is a wine for casual drinkers at a party, but I sure liked it.

A delicious blend of grenache, syrah, and carignan. Beautiful aromas of cassis and raspberry jam. Tons of ripe fruit, and flavors of chocolate, and best of all, 16 bucks a bottle!

A brilliant effort from St.-Emilion's bad boy, Jean-Luc Thunevin, and the Calvet firm, this 2004 was produced from a 25-acre old vine vineyard planted with 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Carignan. After aging in concrete vats, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. It boasts tremendous intensity as well as a big, sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and roasted meats bathed in Provencal herbs. With superb purity, full body, and no hard edges, this savory, mouthfilling red will drink well for 2-3 years.

Rubinrot, fast purpurn. Reiffruchtiges Bouquet von Himbeerkonfitüre, Cassis, Thymianwürze. Ausgesprochen samtiger Gaumen, an Preiselbeeren erinnernd, Edelbitterschokolade, etwas mineralische Noten, reich und kraftvoll bis ins dichte, elegante Finale.
